Talk to me about decoys!! Please!!

I don't have a Foxpro JIB, but I've hunted with someone who did. I don't think the JIB can be beat, but until I can come up with the $$$ I'll have to get by with what I have. What I really like about the JIB is; it can be controlled with your Foxpro remote. Besides, with the number of toppers available now and in the future from Foxpro and Yoter's Den it's very versatile.

I'm in the same box with Weasel... I've been spending way too much money recently on my hunting stuff and I've got too many unfinished projects sitting around that will require money to spend the money on a JIB right now... Although, come fall and I'm out hunting coyotes, I may well get hit by the "aww what the heck" attitude! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I've got two things in mind right now... Weasel's king sized wooley bugger and these pet toys with the coon tail...

Any of you ever see them? They're a coon tail attached to a green and yellow plastic ball. There's a battery opperated motor inside. Turn the motor on and the tail and battery go flopping all over the floor. I used to have a siamese cat (The Tigger) who loved his! He'd pick it up, carry it to the top of the steps leading to the second floor and drop it to watch it bounce to the bottom! Then he'd run after it and start all over! He'd do it time and time again! It was so funny to watch! I was in a Country Kitchen the other day and saw they ahd some at the check out counter... If I could adapt that to work on a pole of some sort.....

(I just went back and reread some of the other posts... I think it's the Weasel Ball that CMiddleton mentioned.)

I got to see a coyote bite a Whirling Woodpecker last fall.

I once had a red tailed hawk fly down and grab the speaker from my old 512 in his talons and try to fly off with it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif If it hadn't been just too hard for him to get a grip... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Have any of you ever lost your decoys to predators or birds? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Easy enough; open the WB as if changing the battery, drill a hole in the hollow half and attach a fired .32 ACP cartridge case (drill & tap primer hole for screw). Find a relatively stiff coil spring that slips into the cart. case snugly, you might have to add a dab of epoxy. Slip spring on a dowel or welding rod to stick in the ground. I slipped one of the wife's old knee high stockings over the ball after spraying ball w/brown primer, it adds a bit of movement to the weasel and assures there is no reflection should paint be scraped off.

It is a Weasel ball. I've made a number of decoys out of those also. I used to have pictures hosted, but I dumped them. I'll take more later today. One simple way to use them is to place the Weasel Ball in a sock. you can have the tail hanging out through a hole or not. Hang it on a branch and it puts on quite a show.

Darn, Weasel, that's too easy! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif Wish I's read that before all the "machine work" on mine and a lot easier to transport without a stick; I feel a conversion coming on. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

These decoys were cheap, but a pain in the neck to make when you consider the sock idea. The Weasel Ball in a sock can be hanging from a fence, tree, bush or even placed on the ground. Besides, the Weasel Ball in a sock is easier to carry and probably works better than these.

I use an awesome decoy and its dirt cheap. One turkey feather and two feet of string. Hang it from a limb. It is funny to watch owls and hawks try to figure out what it is. I use the woodpecker distress with the feather. Grabs a coyotes attention. Works for me. I need to use it on a bear for filming, haven't tried that yet.

I found a very neat decoy not long ago and purchased one basically for crow shooting. The decoy came as a double set with one black for crow and one gray, similar to a dove, for predator. Probably could use either for predators. They are mechanical and use AA Batteries that seem to last fairly well. There is a simple on/off switch that makes the wings flap as if the bird is flying. The decoy rests on a small dowel rod. It looks very good and is rather impressive and the wings flap as if it is real. Also, one wing can be folded and the bird will go round and round the stake, as if injured. I think this decoy is going to be great for Bobcat hunting, and no doubt a coyote would be hard pressed not to notice. There is a small mechanical noise due to the motor mechanism. Don't know if that will make a difference or not, but I hope to try it out this fall and find out. I have already tried the black one for crows and it seems to keep them coming back again and again.

Has anyone else used this decoy with any success?

Good Shooting

6mm06,
I've got 2 of those crow decoys as well. I've only seen them available in black. They work great for crowhunting IMO and have definately brought birds in, even after I've shot at them. I think they were about $20-$25 a piece from the crow mart. I've avoided using them predator hunting simply due too the noise from the motor.
