Tasco Japan scopes

Are they any better then the others? I have an older tasco that ain't to bad of a scope. I was looking for something that holds it zero real good. Just seen some japan made ones for a good price and was wondering. thanks
 
The old Japan Tascos were pretty good scopes for the money. Then they started making them in other countries and getting cheaper and cheaper and junkier and junkier. Shortly before Bushnell bought them out, Tasco was making their stuff in China and the scopes smelled like a burning tire... pathetic.

Not sure if they're making them in Japan now again or not. The Bushnell Elites are made there, so it follows that Bushnell might have some factory workers over there twiddling their thumbs looking for something to make. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Are these new manufactured scopes, or new old stock?

Most of th4e optics tasco uses they get from China they just assemble the scopes in Japan or Tiawan. The Japanese have come a long way in production of electronics and optics since the 1950's and 60's. In fact i have read that the high end Japanese optics are on a par with any thing the Germans or Swiss have ever put out.
 
I have a friend in Georgia who used to shoot some pretty serious .22 LR benchrest. He said the older Japanese made Tasco's (especially the 24X variety) were highly sought after optics among the RF benchrest crowd in his area.

He will still buy any one of these older Japanese made scopes he runs across, even though he no longer shoots competitively.

He said the reliabililty of the Tasco scopes suffered once they started making them in countries other than Japan.

I have a Japanese Tasco Pro Class 6x40 pistol scope on my Hornet and it has been just as good as the Burris on my .308 pistol , both opticly and durability wise. The taiwanies 6-24x40 I have is not anywhere close to the same class .

My exprience mirrors the rest- the Made in Japan Tasco World Class scope is better than Tasco made in another country.

My parents bought me a scope in 1986, and my heart sank when I unwrapped it and saw the Tasco box. Well, 26 years later, it still sits on my 270. Based on this, I bought another one around 1991, this one made in the Phillipines, what a POS that was. Very poor optics.

I would still urge you to look at new, current manufacutere scopes, like the Bushnell Elite 3200, Nikon Prostaff/Buckmaster, Burris Fullfield 2. Better glass and lens coatings.
 
Pretty good scopes if you ask me. There was one I bought on a used Rem 760 .30-06 a little over twenty years ago. It is a fixed 4 power with a wide field. I could not even tell you the last time I zeroed it (more the ten years ago at least) and I can still take it out and hit milk containers at 150 yds from standing. I don't bench shoot this combo as I really don't want to know what it will do.
 
The older Jap Tascos are definitely in a different league than newer models produced elsewhere. The Titan series is also.....
 
I have one of the Japanese 36x 44mm AO scopes from the 70s that I use for load development. It has ridden the rails on many rifles and never gave me a lick of trouble. Repeatable adjustments and holds zero. Just as bright as my Weaver 36 but not as bright as my Leupy 36.

I did find a source that still has a few parts for the older Japanese model like turret caps and sunshades. If anybody needs the phone number, PM me.
