Tasco rittels tanning kit.

I bought a tanning kit in hopes to save a little money having my coyote hides tanned. It's sort of a complete kit. I already had to order a ph test kit, because I can see that I'll need that. You also have to make a brine of salt water to resoften the skin. It doesn't say I'm the directions but should I split the tail or can I leave it complete? Any other Tips would be appreciated.

Split the tails! You need to ensure those are as well fleshed and "stretched" as the rest of the pelt. If you leave the tail intact, you get some rot going on and the tanning solution won't get to it very well either.

So when I send my pelts to a tannery they are splitting the tails? I had five fox tanned a few years ago by the mole mink tannery. I had a fur buyer skin them for me.

When you got those fox back, were the tails split or split and sewn back up?

Check out the pelt handling guide at NAFA. They insist on splitting the tails for coyote, fox, and other critters.

Yes.
Split the tails and salt the same as the rest of the hide.
