TASCO scope question

I have a WalMart special Tasco 3-9X mounted on my Rem 700 in 270 that I bought about a year ago. I know, I should know better, but the small gun shop near my house did not have the particular scope I was looking for, and being a fellow gun nut I wanted to shoot it as soon as possible. The thing is, this scope has endured several calling/carrying sessions and about 100 rounds of 130 gr recoil, and is still zeroed with minimal change! I was recently doing some 100yd shooting on the "back 40", when, while tipping the gun to reload the magazine, I noticed that a sliding noise came from the eyepiece end of the scope. Sounded like something sliding a short distance inside, back and forth when the scope was tilted. Now here's the craziest part: The scope is still zeroed, and the adjustable zoom still works!! What is going on here? Can anyone tell me what is wrong? I think i already know the answer to this question (get a quality scope), but I'd hate to get rid of it after it has served me so unexpectedly well.

Thanks,
Adam

You are right , get a quality scope. Something came apart inside,I can't tell you what but something did.It may be that some prankster put a rock under yourn turret cap. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Apparently it hasnt endured 100 rounds of 130gr recoil.

What does "still zeroed with minimal change mean" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I am just bustin your seeds!

Hey look at the bright side, now you get to shop for a good scope!

Well, having to adjust a click or two every so often (20-30 rounds) didn't seem too bad for a $30 scope... and you're right, it didn't endure did it? Ha ha ha! Oh well, I am just trying to save some money in a tight time, and thought if somebody knew if it was a non-essential part that was broken loose, I might be able to still use it... But, as usual, the voices of reason and ball busting told me what I already thought to be true. Well, I suppose as long as I get it replaced before whitetail season... Thanks for the humor guys! I like Tasco for my rimfires. For $40 I don't think you can beet them with a stick for just a plinking gun. But if your hitting your scopes with sticks.......you need more help than we have on PM.

If I was you I would buy the scope you were wanting, find the UST (undignified Sliding Thingy), and if it still works save it for a rimmy. If it don't....well you now know what is on the inside of a Tasco scope.

I have a Tasco World Class 3-9x40 Illuminated reticle on a heavy barreled Savage 22 mag and the gun shoots beyond well. It has been dropped once or thrice, and POI has never changed. We bought 2 of those scopes for $130 about 12 yrs ago(my bud has the other) and I don't recall ever seeing the same model offered since. Tasco has changed hands a couple of times since, I think........

Yea I would be sure to do it before then. It would sure beat having to jump out of tree and use your rifle to club one to death. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Back in 1989 I purchased 2 Remington model 700 Classics in .300 Weatherby Mag. One was for me and one for my son. At the time, the only scope I had laying around was a 4-16 power Tasco, so I mounted it on mine. I'm not sure what I mounted on my son's. The scope has survived at least 60 rounds of the .300 mag that I'm positive of and maybe a few more at the range and hunting. It still held the original zero from when I mounted it. It's now retired and sitting on my Ruger Target in .22-.250. I also agree with the above posters. I'd spend some dollars and get a decent scope. I don't even remember buying the Tasco, but it's earned a good retirement on the rifle it's now on.

I had a 4x Tasco I buoght in the 80s worked great for years held zero on my 12 ga slug gun my 7mm mag and then two different 50 cal muzzle loaders. Then last year the day before muzzle loader season the whole windage turret just popped out after a shot. I guess the corrosion from all those #11 caps and then the 209 primer blasts just did it in. Anyway I'm not a fan of the Tasco's but that one did live a long life on some hard hitting guns.

Today I did pick up an old Tasco Pro Class 4X30 EER Pistol Scope target dot with AO at the gun show. I got it to put on my 22hornet Contender I've heard the pro class was made by the Tasco custom shop. If not o well didnt pay much for it so if it falls apart I won't be upset.

I had that same sliding noise came from the eyebell end of the scope .Had a cheap tasco pronghorn on a spring air rifle the scope only lasted about a year .Pulled the eyepiece apart and ened up being a ring of metal that holds the rear eye glass.Just gave it a couple of taps each side with a centrepunch where the marks are to hold it back in place.I only like the tasco scopes made in the Philipines or Tasco titan or Tasco extreme series for better quality.Trying to stay away from cheap scopes as they have ruined a couple of good hunts especially in wet weather.

Yeah, my buddy let me borrow one of those from him once. The amount of ammo I went through trying to zero it before I figured out what the problem was would have bought two Tascos.
A toilet paper tube and two toothpicks would have been a better choice.

It did look nice, I don't think my buddy had shot it much.
I wonder why. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks jorg243, it looks like I will perform some scope surgery today and see if it is that ring.

Is it a World Class? If so send it in for repair. I think they make you pay $10.

People like to write off Tasco as a unworthy scope for any rifle. Maybe the new ones are. I haven't tried the new ones. I hate to admit it but I've killed more critters with Tasco scopes than all others combined. Mine are all World Class scopes from 15-20 years ago. Back then funds were more limited and when I scraped up enough money for my new rifle, I rarely had enough left over to drop on a expensive scope. I still have a Tasco WC on 2 ARs and my .270 deer rifle. I always said I was going to upgrade my glass on those rifles but I have a hard time doing so when they are working so good still. I have a brand new in the box Bushnell Elite for my .270 sitting on the shelf for the last 1 1/2 years waiting to take the Tascos place but just can't justify it with it working good still. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate quality glass. Being a little less poor than I used to be, now when I get a new rifle I put better glass on these days but the cheap Tasco (world class) served me well. Mine have held zero. I get my deer every year. Usually at extended range. Coyotes still drop like flies. Until they quit working I'll probably leave them on the rifles that have them. I wouldn't slap them on a rifle for a guided elk hunt but in a pinch they worked and still are. Again I can't say what the new stuff is like. I probably jinxed myself now. All 3 will crap out on me tomorrow. lol!

Good hunting

Many years ago I had a salesman at Cabellas talk me into a tasco "world class" 3-9 for my '-06. It lasted about 2 seasons, only shooting a couple boxes before hunting started and then getting shelved. After that the scope began grouping in different locations, each group moving high and right. Re-zero'd and checked mounting repeatedly with the same results. So pulled and replaced with leupold, happy elk rifle ever since.

I figured it just couldn't handle the rifle so I started moving it to lighter and lighter calibers until it ended up on a 10/22. Then it completely failed, the reticle rotated 45 degrees. I can't say I was too impressed with the whole thing.

But, I just ordered a tasco 6-24 for my HMR. Mainly because it was just cheap and even if it's only good up to 12-14 it will be better than the cheapy 3-9 it's wearing now for PD's. If it falls apart being only used on the HMR, I'll write the brand off forever.

And I know you get what you pay for in optics, but I can't justify a $300 scope on my $150 rifle /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
