Taxidermist and mounts in S Africa

Heres a brain teaser, I am as usual curious. What does Taxi stuff cost in USA?

Here in SA taxidermystery ( get it) is very strange, prices are very erratic. We pay generally around R3500 for a cat mount, this is a full mount with an animal sitting on a platform with a bush and sand etc. Thats equal to about $564,51 with the currency at R6,20 to a ONE Dollar. The cheapest was R3200 I could find and most was more than the $564,51. This is a proper Taxi guy not a back yard job.

A jackal full mount is about the same. So, how does this compare with USA on a bob or coyote?

I am in the northern cape and from me to Cape Town I know of 2 Taxi guys ( one is a woman ). Its not a very financially rewarding business here in these parts and this is typically the reason why, we have no fur market in SA and also tanning is not heard of in most parts. I know one guy who tans, I know another tannery up for sale for R60,000 ( $9,600) and its still for sale, has been for over 3 years.
Anyway, I am just curious.

i think $200-400 is the general range for a full coyote mount. depends on what you want and how extravagant you want it. some guys charge more some less. you get what you pay for i guess.

Wow if I could get a jackal stuffed for $200 I would do it full time, and sell them oveseas, thats mighty cheaper in SA RAND. I skin all my own kills if shot in the chest from the front(no damage) and prepare my own furs, but selling it is not easy.

In 2004 I had a good year with lynx, I trapped 28 and called in a total of 19. Of these all trapped ones dispatched with head shots with a 22 were saved, and skinned, but the called in ones only 9 were saved, the bullets make far to much damage.

I have a few neat skins in guest rooms that guests sleep in, I would have a few extra full mounts but they are far to expensive to have done.

For a full body coyote or cat (Bobcat size not Mt.Lion) I would say $400 to 800 depending on who is doing it , base sceenery etc.

I have asked 6mm for his kindness, and to place a few pics here soon of a jackal, 60,2 pound lynx and a kitten all full mounts, so I have only been able to take a photo of the pictures I have on old film format and send to him, so it wont be crystal clear but ok to see well enough.

I see your price is about double the other one was, anyway interesting reading /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif I will ask 6mm to please hurry /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I happen to be a taxidermist, and I have to say it
depends on the part of the country you’re in and who's
doing the work. Most taxidermist in my area charge
from $450.00 to about $1500.00 for a life size mound
of that size. I know a lot of hunters have there
animals mounted in Africa before having them shipped
to the US because the price is so much cheaper.
Some taxidermist will dry preserve hides instead of
having them tanned, or use cheap materials. There is
definitely a difference between, a good competition quality mound and a commercial mound.

Well, $1500 is a lot of money in Africa, we must times your $ by at least 7 to get the local currency, so $1500 is equal to R9,300 man that a lot of deneros! Anyway it is intersting to see what is the story /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
