this year i got my first buck and dropped him off at the taxidermist in november...needless to say this is the first deer i have ever had him do...and he didnt give me a time frame...how long on average does it take to get a shoulder mount whitetail back...also he is a small private taxidermist who when i dropped of my deer had already 14 capes drying /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

It all depends. If you were the first one in, you could probably get it in a month, if the forms and stuff came when they should. If he has 20 ro 30 in front of you, then you are looking at the 6-9 months.

Most taxidermists do not do a mount one at the time from start to finish. He will cape, flesh and do things like that as they come in. At the same time they will be getting ducks, bobcats, and other stuff. Once it gets to him, he has to order the forms and all that.

Then he is also doing antler plaque mounts, Europeans, hogs or what ever.

If one tells you he can get back much quicker, he probably isn't very good, because he doesn't have much business. I have had 2 done by a guy who only does it on the side when he is not rice farming. He does very good work and got them back pretty quick, but he only had a few to do for freinds and their freinds.

With a part time taxidermist you are probably looking at 1 year plus. A full time taxidermist that I use is 9 months or less. One thing I look for is the tanning of the cape. If a taxidermist is doing his own, especially a small taxidermist, he's not doing my animals. This usually is what takes up the time if he is sending the capes off to get tanned. I don't mind the wait then because I know the quality will be there. My big stuff goes to Damuth Taxidermy in Brady, Tx. He's a tad higher but the quality is unbelievable. He also has his own tannery. Turn around with him is 8-9 months.

The taxidermists I have been around noramlly take from 8 to 14 months. Most have to send the capes off to a tannery and that alone can take several months. I'd be leery of a taxidermist who has a quick turn around time. Just like I'd be cautious of one that takes too long.

Just because a guy does his own tanning, does not mean his work is junk!!!!!!
The guy sending his capes out better have a good tanner like ie; River Runnner /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. Because if the tannery messes up then what??
6-14 months turn around is normal. If your a new client and possibly bringing lots of work you may get faster turn around. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I actually know a couple local taxidermists around my area that pickle the hides instead of sending them to a tannery. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
