Taxidermy School

I was curious if any of you know if this would be worth doing. I would like to take up taxidermy. Those of you who do it, does it pay well enough to do full time or would it need to be a side job?

It depends on the clientel that you aquire. Some people just do it part time, but if you have enough coming in then you could do it as a full time job. It takes a while for the word to get around about the quality of work that you are able to do.

I ordedred the kit with lessons that used to be sold in the back of Field and Stream back in the 60's. Man you should have seen those poor birds after I got through with them. Never followed through. Now that I'm coming up on retirement it is appealing to me but I have no idea how to go about learning the art. Seems like an apprenticeship might be the best way to go.

i tried helping a taxidermist in trade for training and thats is a very slow laborous process you can learn that way but then i just put up the money and went to a year long tech school college for taxidermy and that was very beneficical i did it full time for the first year and if you can keep motivated and working it does pay well enough to make it but it severely cuts into your hunting time i have since kept my shop going and just do it part time and when construction layoffs come

Big Jim,
Taxidermy is a wonderful hobby. It can also become a full time business. Don't kid yourself though, it takes years to develop the clientle that will provide a full time living from it. While you may be able to come out of a school after what is going to be minimal experience and start a "full time" business, it doesn't mean that you'll earn a full time living. Along with the taxidermy, you'll need a very good understanding of business priciples. Unless you have a huge advertising budget, a natural talent that allows you to produce mounts considerably better than your competitors and a very strong will to work, when you'd rather be out hunting or fishing, it takes a considerable amount of time to build a full time business. Don't want to seem like I'm raining on your parade, but after 15+ years with my own full time studio, just want to inject a dose of reality.
