TC Encore idea, what you think?

so, I had an idea today for a super light weight, short calling rifle setup. something that would be easy to get in and out of a pickup with, easy to load and unload quickly. something a little old school too if you will.

so the encore comes to mind first. I could get a barrel cut to 16 or 18 inches (I have seen pics, an encore with a 16 inch barrel and it only goes a couple inches past a rifle length forend. kind of neat looking, if you are into that sort of thing.)

with a barrel that sort id think a 223 Rem would shoot well.

I would guess that with a standard profile barrel, composite stock set and a smaller scope I would be in that 5 to 6 lb range?

what do you guys think of this idea, any flaws you can see?

thanks, Jered

Only thing I see is wrong is the single shot encore. I have wanted to put something together like that for years, every time I get ready to do it, I ask my self Do I really want a single shot rifle for calling? To many what ifs... They sure do look good with short barrels though...Jason

One of the most accurate rifles I own is a Contender G2 Carbine in .223 rem. Sighted in at 100 yds there is very little drop at 200 yds and groups are the same, very accurate and easy to carry. Also have carbines in 17 Rem (very, very accurate), 30-30 Win, 357 Max, 35 Rem. Also as my primary hunting rifle I use an Encore 50x209 both in early muzzleloading season and reg deer season. I have never felt undergunned with a single shot. The Idea is to practice and make the first shot count. Unfortuately most are of a mindset that you can't possibly hunt without having a gun with a magazine full of ammo. Having the second round in between your fingers or have it in one of the elastic wrist cuffs with practice you can become very quick to reload a second shot. On the 16" to 18" barrel, That would be a great idea, I would love to find one of the Katahdin 209 x 50 barrels for my Encore. Good luck with your project, I believe you will love it.

I think the Encore will still be heavy even with a short barrel. Have you considered a Contender with a .223 or .204 barrel? The flaw is the lack of a followup shot.

I did this years back with a Contender in 17Rem. for groundhog hunting when I lived in Ohio.

I loved it, I later did the same thing in 22LR for squirrels and a similar rig in .410 for hunting rabbits with dogs.

It is great for hunting when you have to jump in and out of the truck a lot.

I think you'll love it. And if you don't you can always tear it apart and do something else. The great thing about the TC's!

I hunted with a single shot for years. Even managed to pull of a double with it. Practice at the range with quick reloads and second shots and you will be fine.

my encore is the 20 vartarg , with a 16 1/4" barrel, and a 4.5-14x swift scope (rifle). i'm just waiting for dies. for under 200 yards, it should be fine. my 6.5 creedmoor(16 1/4" barrel and rifle) is this years deer hunter.

since my stroke, only single shots can be used(bolt actions are just a little to heavy to open/close) and can realisticly shoot into less than an moa. people say encore/contender don't work, brass splits, and whatever else AIN'T true. my next barrel is a 22 br, and the next one is probably a 257roberts ai.

thanks for the replies folks! I think im gonna "pull the trigger" (pun intended) on this project.

I guess I have a question now...anyone know of a gunsmith or outfit that could cut and crown a barrel down with a quick turnaround time?

I love the idea! Only thing I would do different is go with a little faster caliber. Something like a 22-250 or a swift. Just to make up for shorter barrel. But that's just me. Also a 6x45 would be neat

I saw one at a gun show similar to your discription. It has about an 18 inch barrel but had a 6 position stock. Very cool and small.

I put together a 221 Fireball Contender carbine with a 18" barrel. I have no complaints. I also have a 23" 7x30 Waters barrel. The 23" barrel still makes for a carbine sized rifle that carries and maneuvers easily.

I don't have an encore but I do have a rossi .223rem with an 18in barrel. overall length is shorter than my carbine length AR and more accurate. It's easy to move in and out of the vehicle but a little heavy since it has the bull barrel. I think you will like the encore in the set up you mentioned.
