TC Encore Misfires???

I finally got to shoot my Encore today with the 223 barrel. Out of 40 shots, I had 11 misfires. I used 2 brands of ammo and they both had misfires so I am leaning towards the gun. But,,,,,,,it is new and the only other rounds I shot were with the 7mm-08 barrel where I had no misfires.. Go figure...

I read somewhere that a heavier hammer spring is available. Is this a REAL fix or just covering up a real problem??

Thanks in advance guys.

Were the primers dented? Did all the rounds seem to fit in the chamber the same? It's possible it could be a headspacing problem, chamber on the long size, rounds on the short side. Is there any play between the barrel and the action? These are just some things that come to mind. I'm not really experienced with a break action but I do remember reading about some of these issues with them.

peace.

Have you got a hammer spur on your action if so that may be the cause of your light strikes. I had the same problem when I tried to install a hammer spring on an older Encore frame. I did go ahead and install the heavier hammer spring on both of my frames and have never had it happen again. This is an easy fix as long as you dont have any headspace problems if so that is a different issue altogether.

A heavier hammer spring will fix that problem. It is a combination of light hammer sping and perhaps a deep chamber.

If you reload, I would recommend going thru a headspacing procedure to make sure that your cases are fitted for your rifle.

All things Encore can be found at http://bellmtcs.com/store/

Be sure to read the headspace instructions on the site. I just finished working on with my Encore brass and found my headspacing was all over the place with fired brass. I ended up buying a body die from Redding that I was able to push the shoulders back to achieve a consistent .001"-.000" headspace without effecting my neck sizing. This helped accuracy out tremendously. I fired 6 loads today @ 100yds, with 4 of them falling under an inch, and the best at .420"! Not bad for a 257 Rob.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Re-reading your post, it does sound like your 223 chamber is a little deep and the firing pin has to push the case forward until it hits the shoulders and sets off the primer.

Your 7-08 barrel is probably better headspaced that your 223 barrel. Mike Bellm also has headspace shims that will correct this problem. You may need to shim the breechface for that particular barrel.
Study his site. Lots of good info.

i had the same issue with a factory 7mm-08 barrel a few back sent it back to TC and if i remember correctly it was a deep chamber causeing it, of course T/C corrected this issue quickly, let T/C fix the issue Ron

They make shims you can place behind the the firing pin plug to cut down on the head space.I believe you can read about it on Mike Bellm's website.

I got a 25-06 T/C Encore barrel with a bad chamber that was too deep and too shallow. I had to seat bullets very deep to keep them off the rifling and the chamber was too deep to allow consistent ignition. I had to send it back twice to get it fixed. The second time they also undid my trigger job.

Bellem makes some good stuff, but I would get T/C to do their part correctly before investing more money in the Bellem stuff.
