Then label me a romantic

LOL!

I inherited my dad's military mauser in 7X57. Interesting gun to say the least. Had to resolve a couple of issues with it and yet to have fired it since the fix's. Have reloaded some rounds for it using Hornady 154GR SST's. Expect it will shoot fine and plan on zeroing at 167 yards.
Probably be used for deer hunting thia fall.

Better not fool around... best to zero at 172.6 yards - you might get a long shot.

The 7-08 and the 7x57 are nearly identical, performance wise. The 7x57 suffers from lower SAAMI specs. Meaning factory 7-08 ammo is loaded to higher pressures. Handloaded, they are very, very close. It is like comparing a 6mm Rem to a 243, but with even less of a difference.

The fact that the 7-08 comes in a tidier package(short action) makes it the more practical choice. The only way I would pick the 7x57 over the 7-08 is if I were going with a Ruger #1 or Dakota model 10, Blaser K95, etc.

BTW, I'm assuming you know the 7x57 case is same as 8mm Mauser, 6mm Rem., 257 Bob, 6.5x57. I believe Mauser actually chambered them in true medium length actions.

I have heard MANY state the 7x57 is the parent of the 6.5x55 Swede also. It is not......

I have one for sale that is built on an eddystone 1917 action, it wieghs about 14 pounds but will shoot the nuts off a gnat at 100 yds.

I had a Winchester featherweight in 7x57. Never hunted with it, just shot some loads with it. Ended up selling/trading it a few years ago. Neat round, but I would go with the 7/08, IMO.

I've got the M70 Fwt. in 7-08 but can't shake the idea of a 7x57. Slightly more powder capacity, but vastly more history and appeal. Trouble is, I want it in a true intermediate length mauser action, stocked and smithed by Duane Weibe or someone of that talent. Yes, my wants are bigger than my wallet. That's why I've got the M70

I have 7-08, 260, 6.5x55, and two 7x57's; and a place in my heart for all of them.

The model 70 winchester was my Dad's and is very accurate, and the #1 International just has some luscious wood. Shoots nice too!

Nothing wrong with the 7x57...EVER!

.. a couple of years ago, I was at the local shooting range, sighting-in and checking zero. A younger man, about 30-ish, asked what I was shooting.

I told him that one was a .250 Savage, and the other was a .284 Winchester. He replied, "Man, you've sure got some weird calibers!!"

I said, "Son, I don't run with the herd."

------------------------------------------------------------

I would opt for the 7x57 over the 7mm-08, also, "just because". I like the older nostalgic rounds that will STILL get the job done. Who needs a 300 Mangle-um for a 120 pound whitetail at 50 yards?? I have never felt the need for a magnum, with the exception of turkey hunting. For that, I would like to have a 4" magnum!!

That's NICE Karl.

Back in the 60's when I had a nice Winchester Pre-64 collection I had one in 7x57 Mauser. It is one of the rare calibers in Pre-64 Winchesters. I ended up selling all my Pre 64's like a dummy but if I could get one back that would be the one.
I see Catkiller has one. You better hold onto that one, it will be worth some bucks someday....especially unfired.

GC Sounds good to me!! Actually, the 167 yard zero is the result of staying within a 4 inch POI at the velocities expected from that rifle. Just an anal way of not having to expend any mental energy calculating elevations when hunting, which MAY mean letting the critter go. However, I may just zero this one at 172.6 for that long shot..
