Tennessee Laws

If anyone could straightin me out on the coyote hunting during deer season.I take it as during archery, muzzelloader season you can use shotgun, rimfire to hunt coyotes. Then during gun season you can use centerfire. If i am wrong please straightin me out. thank you B.R.R.

BRR,

You are correct about muzzleloader and archery season. During rifle deer season, you are only allowed to be in the woods with a "deer legal" caliber, i.e., 6mm/.243. We got one law changed this year regarding the legalization of shooting foxes with centerfire. Many of us would still like the caliber restriction during rifle deer season eliminated, but we'll work on that in the spring.

If I may add, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif we have two young sportsmen’s hunts. These special statewide big game hunts also apply.

Edit: Shotguns with #4 birdshot and smaller, rimfire firearms (including .17 cal), muzzleloaders and air rifles are still legal for small game hunting during big game seasons.

I prefer the air rifle myself... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Brian and crewmembers,

This is the passage in the regulations that is the death to the varmint hunter between September to January:

I have called and spoken to Morristown TWRA and Officer Overbay, who confirmed that our long guns cannot be used during archery and muzzleloader seasons. It is as it is written. You can use your centerfire during any gun season as long as you have the appropriate big game stamp.

Also, you cannot have any military or other like-type ammunition (solid shot) on your person. Refer to:

http://www.state.tn.us/twra

Look under Hunting. Pay close attention to the Illegal Methods portion. Any other specific questions, call the regional office and get a name with their response.

I really don't start hunting coyotes until late January anywho. With the reported bear poaching that is supposed to be going on, I can see the logic of the regulation in the eyes of the TWRA Enforcement and the Wildlife Commission. If changes are in order, it will take a bunch of people attending some TWC meetings.

Iron Mike,

Only deer legal calibers are legal for hunting predators during deer season. You absolutely cannot use .22 centerfires or smaller during that time period. In fact, the only time .22 centerfires are legal is when deer season is experiencing a closed split or closed for the year.

Blake,

That is most true my friend. My preference is to hunt with centerfires of .22 cal. Hence, my season is basically closed from September to January. I don't like to use a shotgun, because I have spinal injuries that prevent the use of high impulse firearms. I can wait.

God Bless All Here,

Mike

But guys don't forget. Like Critr Gitr pointed out to me, the regulations say nothing about using a muzzleloader during deer seasons to hunt varmints or coyotes with.
