Tennessee Turkey Time, Two Down!

Fall turkey season has been open this week in Tennnessee during the archery only for deer week that separates the two gun seasons. Yesterday I went out on the four wheeler with a few ideas of where I might come across some turkeys in the woods. The second place I stopped and got off, I walked fifteen feet off the trail and looked off the ridge and into the draw below me. There they were, and they didn't seem to have heard me come up the hill on the other side. I crept up behind a log and watched for a while, they were all between 75 and 100 yards out. Having forgotten my mouth reed calls I resorted to trying to make some clucks, cuts and any other sound that resembled turkey sounds to try to draw them in. I don't know if it was me or if the turkeys were going to go the way they did because they wanted to, but they came in closer and finally offered me a decent shot at 35 to 40 yards I guess. BOOM! turkey's jumping, BOOM! turkey's running, BOOM! turkey's flying. No turkeys down! Some were still close because this was happening fast and they didn't know what was going on. The closest one was still around 35 to 40 yards and when he stuck his head up...BOOM! and it was all over. Finally got one. I had in mind of filling all three tags at once but I won't complain since I wasn't leaving empty handed.

Now today after going to town and getting back a little late my daughter and I got camo'd up and went out for a repeat. Drove the four wheeler out and found fresh turkey tracks. Rode partway up the hill and walked the rest of the way to the same spot I had scored the day before. Didn't see any, didn't hear any respond back to the calls I had remembered to bring this time. Drove around a little more and finally spotted a couple flying out of a tree and over a ridge. They had started to roost and I told Elizabeth that it wasn't looking good. The woods are thick and deep with huge hardwoods, steep hills, and deep hollers. Today being overcast and foggy, the visability was BAD! I was just hoping the turkey's were having as hard of a time seeing us as we were seeing anything at all. The only hope now was jumping some up on the way back in. I knew that turkey's were around, we saw a few and heard some close by going up on roost. About 200 yards down the trail I saw some up on the hillside about 100yards away and we took off sneeking up through the brush, hiding behind trees and being as quiet as we could (hard with a 6 year old) while still trying to make good time. Looking through the limbs I found the closest one, again probably about 35-40 yards and shot, and missed. Maybe a branch, maybe just can't see to good in the fog. Another was close by and got a shot at it and dropped it! I was really wanting to get one since Elizabeth was with me. We killed a hen, not real big but it will eat good! I high fived her, she congradulated me and we headed in to the house with my second Tennessee turkey in two days. AWESOME! When we checked the turkey in at the market I rewarded her with a chocolate milk and a Hershey bar for being such a big helper. That was the icing on the cake for her! What a great afternoon.
