"Terminal ballistics, a sub-field of ballistics, is the study of the behavior of a projectile when it hits its target." - Wikipedia
Short Version:
If you hunt, please take my survey!
Terminal Ballistics Survey
Detailed:
I am a hunter and fisherman who also happens to be a college student. School exposes me to all sorts of information, both "good" and "bad." Sitting in Biology of mammals one day, I listened to my professor, who is a veterinarian and raptor surgeon, talk about a study he is doing involving lead-related mortality in raptors.
As he described his project, collecting hunter killed carcasses, radiographing the remains, and interpreting the distribution of lead fragments, I kept hearing the same underlying message: he didn't have anyone from the hunting community with which he could collaborate.
I grew up hunting and fishing and have seen on numerous occasions how "scientists" can do good science and still f%*k up a perfectly good study by not including input from the people who are on the ground. With the hopes of providing him that insight, I decided to get involved.
The first chore ahead is to take a poll of hunters who target varmints: prairie dogs, squirrels, coyotes, rabbits, etc., to find out the circumstances surrounding their hunting and killing so that we can more precisely replicate those conditions and find out what's really going on.
This survey was designed by myself and a team of biology students comprising of 3 hunters, a USMC sniper, and a farmer’s daughter(not even kidding). We are investigating the effects of different rounds on rodents that comprise a significant portion of raptor diets.
This study is aimed at elucidating the relationship between ammunition and lead fragmentation with the hopes of avoiding blanket anti-lead legislation (like in CA, AZ, AK) or needless death in the nations population of birds of prey.
As I said before, I am a hunter, and not interested in banning anything, nor is my professor.
If you fit into the varmint hunter category, I would greatly appreciate it if you took a few minutes to complete my survey.
Terminal Ballistics Survey
At the end in box #8, it would be helpful to me if you wrote "Predator Masters Forum" so that I know where the data is coming from - I've got this post on numerous forums.
Thanks for your time,
-Casey
