Texas retirement property

I need some suggestions from the guys who currently live in or know about Texas hunting, What would be the ideal area to purchase some retirement property with hunting predators/hogs and deer as my recreational pursuits? How hard is to to obtain permission to predator hunt on the larger ranches and/or what would be the minimun amount of acreage a person would need to buy, I'm guessing 200 acres would be the minimum? Thanks Wade

Regarding your question about the size of a piece of property you would need to be functional as a recreational tract, you should probably be a little more specific. Texas is a very diverse place with property values and animal populations varying greatly across the state. In the east Texas area you could get by with a 200 acre tract and that would be considered larger than the typical tract.

Out west or south that same 200 acre tract would equate to a 1000 acre tract. Of course I am speaking in generalities but you get the point. Property values on recreational type properties in Texas will range from as little as $100 / acre in far west Texas to upwards of $10,000 an acre depending on the location.

Give me an idea of the area in Texas you are thinking and I can give you a little better idea. If you are seriously looking you might check with cwbycrshr here on the board. He is a realtor in the north Dallas area and seems to have a good hold on the recreational land market.

Cody, I appreciate the feedback, I have visited San Antonio several times but that's about it. I was mainly interested in what you Texans view as desirable areas to hunt, and because of the diversity what does each part of Texas have to offer the other areas do not, and of course what areas hold the largest population of huntable animals. We are trying to get down there this summer for a week and would like to narrow down the areas we would visit taking in mind some of the feedback here. Would like to live on the land I would purchase but living in a town close by would be an option also. Sounds like I may want to get ahold of cwbycrshr in advance of the trip. Thanks again Wade

My wife wants to retire to Dallas, I want to retire to Tucson. Can't afford two retirement homes...one for her, one for me :). So we are still working on a compromise. Rural Texas, somewhere NE of Dallas may be an option.

I'm looking forward to seeing additional posts here.
