That USDA trapper who video'd his dogs working a yote made FOX

his quote was totally the wrong way to describe what he did. "just letting them fight" makes the bunny huggers all sick inside.

People just don't get that some animals must pay a price to help train a dog so that others in the future won't suffer. I have let dogs get into it with deer and hogs for longer than was necessary, however it was only to teach them, and not for any other reason. Letting a dog fight a wounded or trapped animal will increase the chances that that dog is able to find cripples later in life. People are way too uniformed and short-sighted to see that though.

This news story is making hunting sights all over the web and hunters are shocked at it - you think non-hunters (majority of voters) is going to care what it takes to train a dog?

To them it's all barbaric. I live in WA and they outlawed bear baiting, running anything other than rabbits/coons with dogs, and trapping with body gripping traps.

I lost a lot of stuff I used to do, all because the anti's got a hold of some vids and ran TV commercials maximizing on the shock factor....same as this FOX news story is doing.

So now I'm stuck reading about it on PM

Man I'd love to decoy some yotes and tree some bears/cats, but I can't. So I gotta go to Idaho to do it.

im sure if people seen some of the things i have done to teach my dog, they would throw me under the jail!!

thats why noone will ever see this part of how i do things! some thing are just better left alone.

Doing that is one thing but doing it in front of the press is another. I have posted many pics of hounds chewing on a dead coyote.
Last week a guy posted a vidio on my site. It was recorded on YouTube. Several hounds ripping and pulling on [beeep] shot coyotes. Same deal doing it is one thing but posting a vidio on a public vidio hosting site is wrong. It wasn't only one coyote but several. Same deal a right place for it and not there.

So true! That's one of the reasons we have the photo and video policy here on PM. Photo's and video can be easily taken out of context and used against us. The anti's will use everything they can get their hands on to defeat us. And way too often we hand it to them on a silver platter!

Attachment option? Same photo policy. Logged in viewing.

At the discretion of the poster.

Is it worse to post the video or pics of the coyote getting streched,or post negative comments about the pics or the hunter who took them? I like to see good action shots of dogs working, all mine end up looking like I took the Free Syrian Army hunting with me. Alah Snackbar! The antis already have millions of internet pics to choose from so what does it really matter? I would rather be a guy checking out cool pics and videos than one of the "most hunters agree what they are doing is wrong" crowd. If we can't live the truth here where can we go?

Please explain.....the only scenario in which that statement carries any logic is if you are dealing with a dog that has absolutely NO training or instinct.

I can't reply for Norcalkyle but I can give you my perspective.

Letting a dog in training work trapped coyote gives you a way to get a young inexperienced dog on a live coyote and slightly shift the playing field in the dogs favor by controlling the range of motion of the coyote. Allowing a dog to work coyotes on a drag helps a dog learn how to follow a coyote from a trapset. Coyotes on drags will often go long distances esp. on frozen ground and having a dog that can track and recover will save you gear and fur. This translates over to calling for recovery of cripples.

Even the best dog with killer instincts still needs to be trained and tweeked into a working/denning/control dog. They are not machines that we can program, they require constant training and refreshing to keep the dogs in top working form.

I don't over do it with trapped coyotes as I don't want the dog to get too comfortable with coyotes by thinking that he is superman and all coyotes are somewhat contained.

This training tactic has been going on in the coyote control world forever. You have to remember in ADC control work that the end all be all is killing coyotes not fair chase or fur.

I keep a whole froze coyote for working my dogs.
I will drag ol frosty out thru the pasture and let the old dogs find it from time to time.

Young dogs get to chase it and then after they are started on the collar, they get "called" off while they chase.
Then send sent back out and the process is repeated.

Would not even start to type about training in the field.

Stay after them.

Getting a young dog to get face to face with the game you are training them on is the best possible way to start training. My most current deer dog was trained this way, and he located and caught 4 cripples solo before he was 5 months old... That sounds like instincts to me. I don't trap animals for training, but I [beeep] sure take advantage of a cripple... and my dogs performance proves that for me this works very well.

I don't understand what you are getting at, but by implying that having a dog work a cripple or trapped animal is not a good training method doesn't make sense to me. Would you rather I let my dogs watch OLN and show them the animals they are supposed to hunt?
