The .223 WSSM

A co-worker and his brother both have Winchester Model 70 Coyote's in .223 WSSM. He says they haven't been able to achieve much accuracy with the handloads they have tried. He did say they haven't tried any bullets over 55 grs. though. Do any of you have a .223 WSSM and what has been your experience with it? I would appreciate any info you can give regarding powders/bullets that have worked well for you and I will pass it on to him. Thanks a bunch!

i have one- i shoot 37 gr bullets out of it its deadly accurate- i have i sighted in for 100 yards but if there is a 'yote at 350 i just put the crosshairs on the shoulder of him and they fall stone dead. thry v-max bullets

92, where are you getting 37gr bullets?

The .223 WSSM's are finicky in my book. I have custom rifles and a wildcat version as well. The wildcat really shoots but the std round is finicky to say the least. H4350 seems to be a good powder in my wildcat.

Winchester rifles are the pitts for accuracy. Brownings seem to do much better. Personally, I don't see a use for the .223 WSSM as a Swift will do anything it can. If I were to buy one it would be the .243WSSM version.

My son used to own a Win Shadow in 223wssm. It shot horribly. The best we could get out of it was 2" and only with one load. All the rest we tried went 6" to off target. He sent it back to Win, and they sent it back with no problem found. He traded it for a Browning, and this one shoots well.

He likes to use a 60gr Vmax and a bunch of IMR4350, which gets around 3,650fps for coyotes. Another accurate load is H4895 and a 50gr Nosler BT at around 4,050fps.

Nic, what kinds of groups can they get?

K-22hornet, he told me the best they had been able to do with the Winchester Coyotes consistently was 2 1/2-3" groups or so. He also said that they had only shot one 1" group but it must have been a fluke because it hasn't been repeatable. And this is from a couple of guys that have probably been reloading for 35-40 years! It's not as if they don't know a little something about reloading or anything! He's pretty well resorted to the fact that they have a couple of rifles that could best be used for tomatoe stakes! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Are they accuratly finding and setting the bullet for COL ?
or just setting COL from published spec in load databook?

even my esteemed CZ will shoot bad groups if the COL isn't reasonably close.

Primers. try different primers. Have seen WLR primers in 2506 make awful groups, replace with Federal match and its Minute of coyote all day. and then I have seen that above, reverse with a change of powder.

Nic, that is better accuracy than we got with the Win. Our only load that would shoot was with a 50gr and a 52gr bullet. We tried different primers, powders, bullets, free floated the barrel, lightened up the trigger, nothing, nada, all to no avail. If this is SOP for Winchester, it's no wonder they are going out of business.

The Browning is a different story. Shoots well with many loads.

Tell your friends I wish them luck.
