Must be a real bargain at 12k per rifle. lol The U.S. Army has chosen Heckler & Koch to make its new Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System.

The March 31 contract award to Heckler & Koch Defense Inc. – worth up to $44,500,000.00 – allows the Army to purchase a maximum total of 3,643 Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System (CSASS) units, according to an announcement on FedBizOpps.gov.

In June 2014, the Army released a request for proposal to invite gun companies to build compact versions of the service’s 7.62mm M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System.

Part of the goal of the effort was to arm snipers with a rifle that doesn’t stick out to the enemy as a sniper weapon. The M110, made by Knight’s Armament Company, is easy to recognize since its 46.5-inches with suppressor, more than 13 inches longer than the M4.

The CSASS is also intended to provide improved reliability, accuracy and ergonomics, according to the request for proposal. The CSASS is also designed to have reduced felt recoil and better suppressor performance.

The minimum ordering obligation for this contract is 30 CSASS units to be used for production qualification testing and operational testing which is scheduled to take 24 months, according the award announcement.

so wait.. it looks like an AR-10 style platform with what i'm guessing is either an integral or over the barrel suppressor to keep the length short?

i hope that some kind of NVG or Thermal scope strapped on the top of it for $12,000

The m110 used over the barrel im guessing this one does too. What a waste. The 110 was a flop and this will be too.

Many years ago I had access to an H&K PSG-1 and all the Federal Gold Medal Match 168 gr. I could shoot. It was an extremely fine rifle. What it was actually worth I couldn't say, $12,000 is a lot of greenbacks.

No doubt it will be a nice rifle and a bargain compared to past expenditures.

Here are a few examples from an article in 1986,

This nut, which is described as "a plain round nut," was made by McDonnell Douglas for the Navy at $2,043 each.

Other items offered in the catalogue include a $285 screwdriver, a $7,622 coffee maker, a $387 flat washer, a $469 wrench, a $214 flashlight, a $437 tape measure, a $2,228 monkey wrench, a $748 pair of duckbill pliers, a $74,165 aluminum ladder, a $659 ashtray and a $240- million airplane.

I used to order energizer silver oxide 6.0 volt camrea batteries for an explosive device for 75.00 each. Could buy the same battery at the camera shop for 6.95.

Government waste- almost priceless

Are you wanting the US military snipers to be equipped with a $400 scope from Bass Pro?? lol... [beeep], a Leupold Mark 6 just in itself retails for almost $3,000.

You have to remember that lots of spare parts per rifle come in that contract. It isn't simply the gun, but extra barrels, repair parts, tools, AND Depot level support & LABOR ....you name it. You need to see past the crate of weapons and look at all that goes into the contract.

At $12,000 that is likely cheap for what they are asking.

This.

The M110 deployment package sells for around $25,000 so uncle sam probably paid $15-18K for it. Drop in the bucket compared to munitions and 40mm rounds.

I don't think the HK will disappoint

Wow.....

I guess I just don't get the price from what I see. Maybe there is more to it...
I'm with Tim I wish I had a product I could sell them

I'd rather have seen them go with the Larue OBR over an H&K piston gun but they might not have been able to fill the contract fast enough.

Larue pulled out early on, forfilling the contract may have been part of it.

I'm sure they still supply the OBR to certain units on a smaller scale, They built the Stealth for such reasons and it was fielded overseas to look exactly like a standard issue but shoot lights out.
