THE BEST CALIBER?

What do ya'll think is the best caliber for shooting great groups and predator hunting?

The reason i ask is i am fixing to sell my 243 and buy another 243 in a diff. brand. I am just wondering if there is a better round for what i am wanting to do.

I am having a hard time deciding between the 243 and the
22-250??????? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

You really can't go wrong with either caliber. Since you already have the 243 I would suggest staying with the 6mm and just upgrading the rifle. Consider the Tikka line, reports have been very favorable by many.

Well the 6.5-284 is a great caliber for groups. Look at the groups turned in by the 1000yd. shooters. It will also put down any yotes out there if you can hit them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I guess we need to know more about what you are wanting to do. For example, kill a yote at a ridiculous range, no fur damage, What exactly are you wanting to do? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

i am wanting to shoot a 1/2 in. to 3/4 in. group at 100 yds. and smoke any small/med game i shoot with it. i am thinking on staying with the 243 since i have about 200 rounds of brass saved up for reloading in future. i am leaning towards the savage model 16 in syn & stainless weather warrior with the hinged plate.

I shoot 2 savages now. A 22-250 and a 308. the 22 is a 112 bvss. Long action, I bought it before savage made a short action. The 308 is an 110 FP. Same thing, before the short action. I swapped the stocks, I now have the heavy laminated stock on the 308, It is just a long range target gun. The 22-250 wears the factory black synthetic stock from the 308. I did camo the rifle though. I just couldn't go out yote hunting with a shiny 26" stainless barrel. Both guns are SHOOTERS, I handload for both rifles and they both shoot "less than" .5 MOA 300 yds. I shoot the 308 out to 600 on paper, but I am still working on my wind doping skills. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif I guess I am trying to say that you would not be disappointed with a savage. Brad.

The 243 is a great all around round unless you are looking for an excuse for a new/different rifle.
For coyotes and smaller, 22-250 is great. If you are considering targets bigger than 243 would get the nod.

You say you have a .243 keep it and get the 22-250 also both are great rounds just depends on what your plans are yotes,deer,p-dogs?

brdeano,

"both shoot >.5 MOA 300 yds."

You might want to edit that? I doubt that you want to say they shoot greater than 1/2 minute groups, that would include 6" groups.

Looks like "better than" got mixed up with "greater than":)

6mm Rem , haven't been without one since 1971. I belive the 6mm Rem is the best 24 cal you can chamber your rifle for. Love mine. Shilen SS Match barrel 1&12 twist, Left Hand 700 Long Action, Lee Six Stock. This rifle groups the Hornady 87 gr BTHP with Win 760 1/2 inch or better, great deer and yote rifle. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Both,
Keep the 243 buy a new 22-250, NEVER can enough guns. 243 is alil overkill for most predators. But the 250 can also be hard on dogs. 243 has heavier grain bullets that work for deer. 250 is cheaper per round and has the mini 40 grainers that really zing out there.

25-06 is a great all around gun if you plan to step up for deer or antelope. If it's just a critter and predator gun I'd pick a 22-250.
