I disagree. Vanguard is a Howa. Smoother action, easily adjusted trigger and they will shoot with a Savage any day of the week without any "accurizing". If you took both out of the box and just shot them, you would be hard pressed to determine which one was "more accurate".

You said you were going to buy a used one, right? I'd look for the best deal on one that will shoot good. You never know what kind of deal you can find. If you can find a used Remington 700 for the price of a Stevens, then the 700 would be a no brainer. When it comes to buying a used gun, everything can be different depending on the deal that is available. I bought a 22LR revolver and holster on Sunday for 165 bucks from a very nice guy. He was happy and I was happy. I would have been more than happy to pay him $300 but he was only asking $165.

guess it would depend on caliber and said rifle...sometimes you get a lemon...the only reason i went w/ a vangard is cuz it was available in weatherby mag cals for less coin.... if i was to buy a "standard" cal rifle on the cheap it would not be a vangaurd....like i said a mark 5 would be a different story as i would purchase a mark5 in any cal.....

I have a Stevens 200 in 25-06 and I would say for the money the Stevens is hard to beat . I also have an H&R Handy Rifle in 223 and it is serviceable . It's not a bolt gun but 1"to 1 1/2" groups are about standard with factory ammo and this handles most of my predator needs . It is also very "Handy" and I have a tendency to throw it it because it is easy to use . My understanding from the Handy Forum on Graybeard is they are relatively easy to work on and tune up. I can say if in doubt the Handy is in the back seat .I got mine from Sportsman's Warehouse when they closed down in Memphis for $185 .

Heard lots of guys say they can shoot just under an inch with a Stevens 200 in .243. If you have the money the Axis is nice. HOWA is made in Japan.

I have shot(and own all 3) more Savages, Vanguards and Mark Vs than I can remember. It would be a TOTAL CRAPSHOOT concerning Savage vs. Vanguard, but I like the Vanguard(1500) action better.

As for Mark Vs, guys like yourself who see the big price tag and don't know any better post crap like this. I would bet on a Vanguard or Savage right out of the box vs. a Mark V every time........

So what?

Not a problem just educating the consumer.

I was thinking the same. BEAUTIFUL rifles that don't seem to shoot as good as they look. [beeep] shame though too because for the money, you would expect Cooper-like accuracy.

My guess is that would be a hanging point for you?

There are certain things a Mark V is, and certain things a Mark V ain't. And there are readily apparent reasons why.....

Gottcha,,,,
A little continuing "education" since you recomended Savage.
Savage manufactures some of their rifles in Canada, with 97% of them being exported to the US.
Again,,,, so what?

OP,,, I'd look around for a used Remmy, CZ, or Ruger in 223 if it were me..
