The Best Video

Gents,

I was curious to know what predator hunting video stands out as the overall best. I know some might be better at instruction, while others have more dramatic scenes, but which is the overall best. Does any one video stand out? Any opinion would be appreciated.

Byron South........ "Coming to the Call" #1 & #2

Great videos.... not too "cheesy" (it seems like he's talking to you, as one of his hunting buddies)

The camera work was clear and steady (8 out of 10 shots anyways).

I loved the "tips" inbetween segments..... I hate it when a video drowns the last 30 minutes of the film with "tips/tricks". He kept it informative yet entertaining and brief.

another thing I liked was the footage itself! I hate it when I buy a DVD and it makes me feel like the footage I'm watching is 10 years old....... I like to see new (less than 2 yrs. old) gear and camouflage.... and this video had good up to date stuff.

The video isn't filled with a bunch of cheesy intro music or anything like that.

another big bonus is the nite-hunting segment...... very cool footage!

Overall, I'd actually put this video above most of the other videos out there

I have the following DVD's

Calling All Coyotes 1 & 2 (Randy Anderson)
Texas Predator Pursuit
Predator Quest (Les & Jeff Johnson)

and i have two on VHS
Primos something or other, the only one i'm not fond of.
Operation Predator, i like Ed Wimberly and he's good with the Tally Ho.

My favorites of the above are Randy Anderson CAC 1&2 and Predator Quest but you certainly learn from all of them.

Randy is excellent instructionally and i find him/videos funny as heck. Predator Quest is all business, and very good business imo.

On my list to get based on recommendations i've seen here are the Byron South vids and Randy Andersons Verminators....soon.

I have B Souths Vol. 1 and R Andersons Vol.2

I like Randys better then Souths but thats because Randy is only about 2 hours from my ranch.....I now live in texas and love the B South video however, Andersons is a lil more entertaining as its slightly more comical!

Entertainment-wise, the Randy Anderson videos are OK. Instruction-wise, they are near useless. I've got "Calling All Coyotes I", "Calling All Coyotes II", and "The Verminators".

Anderson spends almost no time on instruction. Things like coyote habits, coyote signs, bobcat habits, bobcat signs, how to select a stand location, distance between stands, and how to select which call to use on a particular stand are barely mentioned, or not mentioned at all. On some of his stands, he doesn't even tell which call he is using. And he wastes our time by showing himself shooting a coyote from his back porch; a coyote he didn't even call up.

"The Verminators" is particularly annoying, with Rick Paillet practically getting down on his knees and begging everybody to buy one of his Tweety calls. And pointing at the camera at the end of every hunt and saying "Now yall go get 'em". That was funny the first or second time he did it, but after that it became really annoying.

Anderson needs to get rid of Rick Paillet and Will Primos, and get Glenn (his neighbor) back. Paillet needs to buy an info-mercial time slot on late-night TV to push his calls on people, and Primos needs to go back to hunting turkeys, which he is well-suited to do since he is one.

If you want to watch a seemingly endless sequence of coyotes and bobcats being blown away, with some humor and missed shots thrown in for good measure, then Anderson's videos are for you. If you want instruction, buy "Calling Coyotes Like the Pros - Coyote Hunting Instructional Course", by Darrell Holland.

I know I'm probably offending some Anderson-lovers here, and/or some Primos/Paillet-lovers, but that is not my intent. I'm just giving my honest opinion after watching each of the mentioned Anderson videos multiple times.

I bought Randy Anderson's "Calling all Coyotes" and thought it was just excellent. I like it when you buy a DVD and get 4 hours of footage rather then 1 or 2. Saying that I have never seen Byron Souths videos but plan of buying some in the future.

Cheers!!

I have all the Randy Anderson videos and have enjoyed them and picked up some useful tips to boot. I will say that on the last one I fast forward through the parts with Mr. Primos in them (I do not care for him), but I enjoy watching Randy and his buddies.

the next one I think I will get is one of Byron Souths.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

What I tried to do was make the videos I wished I could of had when is got started nearly thirty years ago. I use the footage to demonstrate things I believe make the difference, along with basic instruction for the new guys. My videos also have a variety of terrain conditions where guys in just about any part of the country can relate to it.

If you haven't been to my NEW website check it out www.comingtothecall.com. I have some new preview clips on their ya'll might enjoy.

Their are several good videos out now, and as Stump 49 said, you can pick up tips from just about all of them.

Good Hunting

Byron

As some have already said Byron is the real deal! He has taught me alot. Of all the videos I have seen I have gotten more out of his than the rest combined. I have hunted with him on several occasions so I may have a baised opinion but Byron has a sixth sense almost in a way that he thinks like a coyote and can tell you where he will show himself. He is very passionate about the sport and is eager to help anyone he can. It's a pleasure to know him and be considered a friend to know that he puts his pants on one leg at a time like the rest of us. Heck, the last two trips we both missed a dog each and got stuck in the mud until 4:30 in the morning.(Sorry Byron I had to tell). Can anybody relate to that? I'll let him expand on that.

Have to agree with HOGBOY44,
That Glenn Zink, Randy Andersons' neighbor and hunting buddy is just the most humble guy. He has made some great shots running and just says, ho hum I got lucky I guess... I would love to hunt with them two guys. They are so down to earth its unbelievable. I really enjoy watching them. I have almost all of Randys tapes and DVDs, I also have Byron Souths and I like his way of teaching and hunting also. Will Primos, you can tell is more commercial minded.
I still like the down home mannerisms of the Anderson klan just a tad better. My 2 cents

Liked all of those videos mentioned probably Anderson's the best because the terrain was closer to that found in Iowa. I don't know if Randy does it on all his cds but he could leave out the slow motion shooting replays and put in more setups.

Guys, You cant go wrong with any of Byrons videos. Class acts for sure. Just like Rod said, he is a down to earth guy who knows his stuff. Byron is a blast to hunt with and puts out great videos year after year. I even heard volume III will have some really good looking guys in it. Well, Okay one of them may have a bad haircut, but he is still a striking lad, right Byron? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif LOL

Take Care

Guys,

In an earlier reply to this topic, I was critical of Rick Paillet's performance in the Verminators video. I received a private complaint (not from Rick Paillet), so I agreed to watch the video again and re-think the validity of my comments.

I watched the video again last night, and I must agree that I was too critical. Paillet does at least tell what call he is using on every hunt, even if it is his Tweety or Thumper. I know it took a lot of money to make the video, so I shouldn't begrudge the man for trying to sell some of his calls. And his patented "We'll catch yall later" comment at the end of every hunt wasn't really annoying. I must have had a bad day before I watched the video the first time. And I also should have mentioned that I have one of his Tweety calls, and like it very much. As I mentioned, all of Randy Anderson's (and Paillet's) videos are entertaining and humerous. They just don't have much true instruction, in my opinion.

I still say that old Glen Zink needs to get more screen time. That guy calls in predators, shoots well, and is very humble about it.

Also, I would like to mention that I ordered a copy of the Primos Mastering the Art video last week, and received it on Friday. This is an instructional video on how to use Anderson's signature series calls (Hot Dog, Lil' Dog, Ki Yi, and Double Whammy). It is by far the best instructional video I've seen on how to use open-reed calls.

The video doesn't advertise to teach how to hunt predators, even though there are some hunts shown. It only claims to teach how to use calls. And this it does very well. Anderson's natural tendency in instructing is to go too fast and assume that viewers know what he is talking about. But Will Primos makes him slow down and go over the fine details in such a way that true beginners can understand and, with practice, repeat.

If a true predator hunting video was made with this same attention to detail, it would sell big.
