The coyote is a survivor

Called in this coyote last night with only three legs. Had old scar up by the torso, no stump. Maybe was trapped, shot, bitten?

What other injuries have you seen on these resilient creatures

I have shot 3 or 4 three legged ones and a one eyed one. He kinda reminded me of me the way he kept moving his head left and right coming in ;) :ROFLMAO:

And here I was, opening this thread and expecting a tribute of some sort to Ian Tyson.

I’ve killed a few missing parts of legs. Killed two that had broken off of snares and still had the jewelry on when I shot them. I even took one’s leg one fall. Got it that next winter.

My son took the leg off one with a 243. 2 years later in the same spot I shot a 3 legged coyote. Pretty sure it was the same one. This fall is hot one that had no tail..

Put this poor three legged devil out of his misery years ago and a couple of relatively healthy 3 legged ones.

This one was missing most of his lower jaw and tongue. They are tough indeed.

The native Americans have a proverb that goes something like this, “When the world comes to the end, the only thing left will be cockroaches and the coyotes that eat them”

Normally when the back foot/leg area like this is missing is it was shot at while running and hit too far back and low.

I have trapped for years and hardly ever ever get a back foot catch so the possibility of it happening from a trap is very unlikely.

More likely that if it was trapped by a back foot catch that it would pull the foot out without much injury, especially with off-set jaws that most trappers use today.

I read almost that same exact quote. On a gas station bathroom stall 50+ years ago.

I got this “tripod” back in 2016. Started getting daylight picks of him coming into my bait. Got to see him trotting in across the field about a half hour before dark the second time I set up on him. Took him out with the .204 at about 60 yards.

Yes, it’s nothing new, there are many other similar interesting sayings they have. I went to school with them, lived side by side, served in the Marine Corps with them and pastored them. I literally love their many wild life analogies

Living near Standing Rock and spending a fair amount of time hunting it I have an interest in Sitting Bull, one of his quotes that I adapted for myself is “ when the buffalo are gone, we will hunt mice, because we are hunters”.

Great pick up on Ian Tyson, this coyote reminded me of the song

I believe damage as there were remnants of ears. Looked strange coming in, I wrote it up with pics a.couple years ago.
