The Differance in Chkes

Can anyone tell me the difference between an x-tra full choke (which is .690)and the special "Turkey"chokes that are also .690 constriction? It seems to me .690 constriction should pattern the same but the prices of the two are greatly different.
Thanks for all responses.

Well, I am not an expert on shotguns or chokes by any means, but the price is usually justified. I have an 835 that sees limited use because of my bow obsession. The stock .695 choke patterned decently and I killed 2 birds with it, but that being said, my Rhino 2" Extended Ported .695 choke I put in the 835 is AMAZING. 337 BB's in a 10" circle @ 40 yards on a very windy day.

I have never seen a stock choke pattern as good as a turkey choke, even if they were the same diameters. Whether it's the custom porting, the machining process, or any other little detail that jacks up the price, I believe that it's money well spent if you are looking to get a serious pattern out of your shotgun.

Most of the Turkey chokes are ported (to help reduce recoil). I have been using the patternmaster. This patterns as good as some of the turkey chokes I have tried but also works equally well for duck/goose hunting. If they are up close though I can't hit them because the pattern is too tight.

The porting has a more important role than reducing recoil. It strips the wad from the shot column preventing the wad from tailing into and disrupting the end of the shot causing those wide and wild flyers.

That's always been my thought as well. But Federal has come out with their new wad that is supposed to hold together longer and keep the shot in a much tighter pattern. I haven't used them but I have a box in the truck that I've been wanting to pattern. just hard to waste them at $2.30 a round.

I am a rifle nut and not to well versed on shotguns but, my understanding of chokes is this.
The inside diameter of the choke is relative to the bore of the gun. I will try to explain that in writing as it was explained to me verbally. a bore of .750 restricted to a choke of .700 is actually tighter than a bore of .780 restricted to .690. There is a lot of games skeet shooters play with their chokes and bores.(back boring, extending the forcing cones and many more. I have never gotten into the game but have a couple of good friends that do. dependant on the actuall bore of the gun and how much it is restricted determines the choke designation. the length of the choke tube will help to determine the tighness of the pattern also. Usually the larger the shot you fire the more open the choke you will need to use to get tighter patterns. 00 buck will actually pattern tighter in a modified choke than it will in a full choke. I have a full choke on my turkey gun, it will shoot #5 shot really tight to 40 yds, but if I go down to #4 it will spread out on me. I hope this makes sense to some of you, because I typed it as it was explained to me and i still dont understand it. Randy
