The Economy and Fur Prices

With the current status of the world economy in the tank, has anybody heard what the future of fur prices is going to be? Will anybody have any money to buy furs? Share your thoughts.

Yes it does. I am now wondering if it was worth buying all those new traps and supplies this summer. Called in a big Tom last winter and he brought $195. Was hoping prices would stay in that range for this area.

ddsd, from what I have heard and read, cats will continue to bring good money this year. If you can catch or call the cats you'll probably do alright.

But, IF the ecomony keeps going the way it is, well, let's just hope it doesn't.

according to NAFA (north american fur auction) fur prices mainly have no relation to the economy, but more towards the weather. Colder weather means people are going to buy more furs, which does make sense. Their forecast for this coming year looks to be very good.

I think the fur prices will be down, but I have been wrong once. Its a good thing we do this for fun and not to raise our familys.

I heard that coyotes will probably be down but bobcats should do the same or better than last year. I guess we'll see though.

cjg, right now there really isn't a coyote market of any kind.
cats will probably be half of what they were last season, unless things change greatly. But I'm not seeing that. The markets right now is all speculation buying. Going to be an interesting season.

This will be one of the most unpredictable seasons we've had for a while.
If you'd asked me 9 months ago, I would have said it looks great!
-Gas prices high, which means less fur
-most of the stockpiles of leftover fur are finally gone
-China and Russia both were enjoying a pleasant economy
-fur had turned up towards the end of last season
Now
-Our economy issues have spread to the rest of the world
-Russia spent a bundle on their short war
-Gas prices reducing, but still insane!
Now for the good news.
-the stockpiles of leftover fur are still low
-a recent report showed auctions in Helsinki and Denmark has strong support from Chinese and Russian buyers with all items sold at high prices
-Gas still costs a fortune
My prediction will show decent prices but not what we had hoped for this season. When local buyers know the market is rising they will pay more for fur early in the season to encourage more hunters and trappers to get more fur. When the market is up in the air they will pay enough to be competative but will be very cautious.
That's my 2 cents anyway, only time will tell. If things keep falling like they are we may need to keep our fur to fabricate our own clothing to keep warm.
