The Hunt

the night started off warmer than warm, its been that way for days with temps in the high 80's and low 90's depending on what thermometer or phone app you trust at the time.

with the high humidity its like walking into the warm air from an oven when you leave the air conditioning in your home. last night was no different.

i left the house around 10:50pm heading for a close spot just to see if hunting in this heat is worth it. the temp at that time was 81 degrees with 76% humidity and 8 mph southwest winds.

i got to my buddys house and the temp rose to 83 degree at 11:20 pm, this is nuts. it was a short walk about 100 yards to the small rise over looking the vineyard, a place that has produced a lot of coyotes but tonight it only produced heat, bugs and sweat, clothes were already damp with sweat and sticking to my body, even the whistles from the 4 different trains 3 country blocks away failed to produce any howls.

i was persistent, i called and waited, called and waited, pausing about 5 or 10 minutes between sounds. sometimes i would wait a mere 2 or 3 minutes, switch sounds with hopes of getting a reply but even the fur covered coyotes wearing their summer coats knew better than to venture out as the humidity rose to 82% with a heat index approaching 100 degrees.

one spot, extreme heat and stubbornness, produced nothing, as i loaded my gear back into the truck i thought: where to go next...Hmmmm

the best spot i could think of was home and air conditioning, got there at 2 am

i'll wait for cooler temps to try again.

Been there. Done that. More than once. I never claim to be the sharpest pencil in the drawer. And l am sure l will be doing it againšŸ˜‚ (soon) as l just got a load worked out for the new gun, took the glass off and put the Thermion on it yesterday then left for a long family weekend.
Will print out some shells Mon or Tues then zero it and will ā€œhaveā€ to try it outšŸ˜‰.
But humidity in the 80’s would be nice, most summer nights ours hits 99% on my weather station, which is as high as it will read. And my elevation is 2/3 the way to the top from the valley.
