The Minimalist Rifle Battery?

Long post, but I do make a point.
I grew up in the northern great plains, and came of serious hunting age in the 1950's. My dad was an avid hunter of deer, pronghorn, and varmints, as well as upland game and waterfowl. His rifle battery at that time consisted of three rifles. He had a single shot bolt action .22 rim fire, a custom 22-250 on a surplus US Model of 1917 action (commonly called Enfield), and a Remington Model 30S, which Remington based on the same Enfield action. With that combination of rifles he successfully hunted anything available in our area.
My first rifle was a Remington Model 512 bolt action repeater that I bought while I was in high school. I still have and treasure it.
When I left home and the state, I started accumulating more rifles. First came a Browning .243 bolt action, and then a Browning 7mm Rem. magnum bolt action. With that combo I thought I was set for anything I was likely to hunt.
After that I accumulated a Remington 700 22-250, a Savage .222 Rem., a Ruger .223 Rem., a Remington 788 .223, a Remington Classic .35 Whelen, a Sako 30-06, and finally a Tikka .223.
Added to the mix were a few military surplus rifles; a Smith Corona 1903-A3, a Mauser 1898 in 7mm Mauser, and a US Model 1917. I did eventually part with four of the listed rifles.
I think I am coming full circle, following my father's example. Except for the .35 Whelen, I plan to keep only the .22 rim fire, the Tikka .223, and the Sako 30-06. With those, I am covered for everything from cottontails and prairie dogs to coyotes, elk to oryx. I will give the rest of the rifles to my son, and he will get the last four when I can no longer use them.
Maybe dad had the right idea after all!

I too have decided to decrease my armory to some basics. Keeping my Kidd supergrade for the .22 end of things, Dtech .204, and my only splurge is an AIAX .260. Everything else is now on the sale block - of course this list doesn't include my Remmie 870, an H&K 9mm and a 1911 - so I don't know minimalist i really am!

I have decided that I don't want a lot of rifles, I want a few specific rifles. In place of having a bunch of rifles, I try to spend the extra money on the best scopes I can afford and a pair of Leica binoculars.
I have a .22 and 12 gauge, and 4 or 5 centerfire rifles. Should cover about everything I need to hunt!

A couple years ago I sold off any excess and took the money and put it into aftermarket support for the rifles I had left. Settled on a homebrew .243 Savage and homebrew 10/22. Since that time I've re-added a 2nd 10/22 for one reason and one reason only. I was able to take and old beat up Glenfield 25 that was hiding in the dark recesses of the gun safe, paint it, installed a scope I neither wanted or needed along with a old 6-9" bipod I neither wanted or needed and traded it off for the 2nd 10/22 (a trade I'll do anyday of the week). So here I sit with a predator up to deer gun, a lightweight hunting 10/22, and a plinkin 10/22. Don't want no more.

No pics of the latest 10/22. Just a 90%+ 1980 vintage carbine.

I emptied the safe. Told the kids to take what they wanted now, and sold most of the rest, What I have left is a Beretta 391 12 ga sporting Clays, Remington 700 Titanium with a BDL contour Heart barrel in .308, Custom Savage .22lr with Boyd stock, and a suppressor. A .22lr, 9mm, and 357mag handgun. I tinker less, shoot a lot more. I have a one shot one kill confidence with everything. Should have done it years ago.

I am keeping mine as long as I can, then I will sell them if given the opportunity. My family members would never get, or even bother to try to get what my guns are worth.

I own 22 rifles, 6 shotguns and 6 handguns. I'm keeping them and am not worrying about what happens to them after I pass on....I'm dead.

If I were to sell out and just retain my "rifles I need to hunt," it'd be:

Marlin 60 .22 long rifle

Custom built (on bushy upper and lower) AR-15 .223rem. I'd probably swap either my 24" bull barrel or my 16" hbar over for a 20" fluted heavy barrel, but either of my current "coyote AR's" would do fine.

Ruger M77 Mark II .30-06

Sure there are a lot of other rifles that I love and that would do the job, but these are what I'd say I "need". Nothing in the lower 48 these wouldn't put on the ground.

I would say I have followed along the path of many others in this thread. A few months ago I sold off a few guns I never use anymore. Ruger 10/22, Savage 17HMR, Marlin single shot 410, and a Taurus 24/7 handgun in 45.... Proceeds from that went and built my first AR15 which ran me just over $1000. I also purchased a Beretta Neos .22lr pistol. And I have a remington model 700 in 6mm that I bought a .308 barrel for and am in the process of getting it setup with a nice long range scope.

There are many other guns I would like, but for now these 3 cover most all the bases. My next few planned purchases are a KelTec PF9 handgun for conceal carry, a Mossberg 930 semi-auto 12 gauge to handle bird hunting, then of course the AR bug has hit me after building my first so I want to build a couple more just for fun. I'm thinking my next one will be a 6.8 upper, 16", polymer lower with adjustable buttstock and a red dot, making it a fairly compact rifle that I could use for deep woods deer or hog hunting and also a crap hit the fan scenario. Then my gun for when I hit the lottery would be an AR10 in 308 with nightvision

Ive thinned down and still have a pile of guns, the only one I actually use is a 35 year old 700 chambered for the 8MM Rem Mag.

.22 .243 7mm RM 12ga That's all I have. I will be adding an AR but don't plan on any more after that.

Guys with 20 30 guns in the cabinet, more power to you. It would drive me nuts. I would feel obligated to load test for each and every rifle. I just couldn't stand a rifle in there that didn't shoot it's very best.

How about 3 T3 Tikkas? Interchangable mags. they all feel the same. Accurate. I've aquired 3 of them in the last year and could travel the continent with confidence with them. They are comprised of a 25/06,a 7mm Rem Mag, and a 338 Win Mag. Oh I still have a couple other rifles in the safe for now,but I have been toying with a reduction also.

My numbers are a little higher, but the feeling is the same. I'm sure my brother and nieces and friends kids will get them all as I have no children. Good news for them, I'm trying to win the "he who dies with the most toys wins" game

.

Plus some of my guns are worth twice what I paid for them while my dollar bills are only worth half. I like to think of them as working investments in the precious metals and stock markets. That's lead, steel, and gun stocks

. I'm going to invest in the oil market when my collection doubles in a few years thanks to my father-in-law. The gun oil market that is
