The most well-written and comprehensive survival guide?

I suppose the thread title states my purpose quite clearly.

Recently, I've taken interest in purchasing a survival guide. I've never owned a survival guide beyond my old Boy Scout handbook. I'd like to hear your opinions as to which available survival guide is the most well-written and comprehensive; maybe an Army-authored version or maybe something produced in the private sector by a very qualified author? Please respond with as much specificity as possible (title, author, publisher, maybe an ISBN number?). I am a scientist by trade so a very technical guide would interest me, if there is such a thing. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, my PM friends!

There are many good ones, including manuals from the services. Do a search for "Wilderness Survival Manuals" at Amazon.

The problem you will run into is that any manual/book you get will of necessity be a general guide. To be able to truly be prepared to survive you need local knowledge.

Knowledge of the plants that will keep you alive and the plants that will kill you here in the Iraqi desert would be totally useless in the Mojave for instance, as would knowledge of S.E. Asia jungle survival.

I'd recommend getting several as specific as possible to your anticipated needs. Check out you local college or university as well, they very often have survival classes taught by local experts.
 
check out practical outdoor survival by Len McDougall.I believe he has also written many other books on similiar subjects. I also really like SAS survival guide by John Wiseman.It is published by Harper Collins and will literally fit in your shirt pocket and is very comprehensive.I find if its easy to carry i will be more inclined to have it with me when i need it most.It only costs about$8.00
 
I used to teach a survival/health class. I really liked the SAS Survival Guide. Good book, big and had a few good pointers on the most common environments a person might encounter.
