The only thing that I can call in are crows!

I have to say this calling thing is not as easy as I thought it would be. I have hunted in 3 different states and have yet to call in more than one yote.(and I never got a shot at it) I had a chance to call a small farm this week, the owner of the farm has seen two coyotes in the past few days. Now I think this should be a slam-dunk...wrong. I called in a few crows but no yote. Don't get me wrong guys I am having a blast and I will not stop till I get one. And by the way I tip my hat to the guys that are wacken-em. I underestimated how hard it is to call one in.

Roundman - You said you won't stop 'till you get one. I say once you get one you will NEVER stop! Coyote callin' is just too much fun. I live in a low coyote populated area, and I can go 10 to 15 set-ups between dogs. But when they come in its well worth the wait. Do not give up.......

I tell ya RoundMan I live right down the road from you a ways in charleston, And I hunted for over a year to get my first Bobcat, although I seen a few while calling( very few), I did get one. And I had a great time doing it and I learn alot. Yotes on the other hand is a little more tricky than hunting cats, On them you have to pay a little more attention to the wind, since sometimes they cicle down wind to check things out first before they come in the the call.

What type of calls are you using? I use both a E-caller and mouth calls, but I have had better luck with mouth calls on both yotes and cats than E-callers. With a E-caller and yotes I tend to overcall a little.

I usually start off with a series of howls and then wait for about a minute, Then start my distress calls and I make then last only for about a 10-15 seconds then I wait for about a minute, then if repeat the distress call then wait for about a minute, If nothing have coming in by then I raise the volume of my calling a little on the next series of calls and wait for about 2-3 minutes and I do that a couple of time then I go back to the lower volume calling for the rest of the set-up. And i usually stay there for about 20-30 minutes when I'm hunting for yotes.

I am not a coyotes expert, But I have taken a few over the years. My main target for the past several years has been Bobcats.

But that sequence has called in cats, yotes and even foxes for me. So thats what I use every time I call. Except for the Howls on the cats and foxes

Mark-All I have used in Tennessee is a foxpro. I have yet to open up a stand with a howl. I have been using the rabbit distress and rodent squeak for the most part. I do start off with a low volume for about 10-15 min. and then turn it up a small amount. I may be calling for too long a period but some say call without a pause and some say call for a min. and then turn the caller off. Because I am new to coyote hunting and not many people in this area hunt predators I have to learn as I go.

RoundMan,
Welcome to PM and coyote hunting in the east. K-town? Howdy neighbor! There are a few coyote hunters in your area. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have yet to have a yote to come in on my e-caller.

Are you using a decoy? Maybe they are seeing you before you get a chance to see them. A decoy will help that a little. it doesn't have to be a store bought decoy. you can tie a couple of white feather to a piece of fishing line and let them dangle in the wind and that will work just fine.

I called one in the other day with a Pup distess call and it didn't take long for the yote to respond to it. But you have to know they are in the area.

You have to remember that the animals that you are mimick in distress have really small lungs( about the size of the end of your thumb or smaller) and thier screams can't last very long. And the yotes knows this so any thing out of the ordinary will make him a little more hesitant to come in.

On tthe other hand cats are totally different they like constant high pitched sounds, you have to keep the call more constant to keep thier interest.

Don't give up, Just keep at it, things will come together and you will start seeing them.

I live in the East Texas piney woods. Its alot like out there. The does should be about to start fawning. Mite try a fawn in distress call. The wind is everything in the East. Also your aproach to your set up. You can't get by with as much with the eastern coyotes as you can with the western coyotes. Lots more hunters in the woods in the east than west. Their terror alert is alway's at the highest level. Also mite try a cannine or fox pup in distess. Works great this time of year. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help guys. I will try the feather thing and see if it helps. I know there are not huge numbers of yotes here. So not killing one on every trip will not bother me. And if the crows keep coming in Im gonna bring along the 12ga. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
