It looks like we really are going to have a wolf season very soon here in Montana. The area where I live has a large population and I literally have them in the hills around the house. Will be trying to call but spotting them at medium/long range is also a possibility.
I need your advice. I currently shoot a .223 AR for coyotes. Also have a DPMS LR308B (heavy barrel, flat top .308 with a leupold 4-12)that while heavy is a real shooter. I have been pondering another caliber since I think the 223 is just to light, especially out at 200-300yds. The 308 would work but I don't want to make a mess out of what might be a once in a lifetime great trophy hide.
Any thoughts on an AR(15) upper caliber that would be somewhere in the middle. These wolves are running in the 115 to 140lb range according to our regional wolf biologist.
P.S. No reloading, factory ammo only at this time.
