The "Perfect" wolf rifle

It looks like we really are going to have a wolf season very soon here in Montana. The area where I live has a large population and I literally have them in the hills around the house. Will be trying to call but spotting them at medium/long range is also a possibility.
I need your advice. I currently shoot a .223 AR for coyotes. Also have a DPMS LR308B (heavy barrel, flat top .308 with a leupold 4-12)that while heavy is a real shooter. I have been pondering another caliber since I think the 223 is just to light, especially out at 200-300yds. The 308 would work but I don't want to make a mess out of what might be a once in a lifetime great trophy hide.
Any thoughts on an AR(15) upper caliber that would be somewhere in the middle. These wolves are running in the 115 to 140lb range according to our regional wolf biologist.

P.S. No reloading, factory ammo only at this time.

Middle weight caliber, no reloading, AR platform, 200-300 yards.........I think you just described the 18" 11 twist 6.8SPC with 90 to 110 grain boollits.

I'll go along with White Eagle, anything you'd use for deer would work for wolves. No need for a dedicated rifle, there's not going to be that many to shoot.

Of course you need a new rifle...it's the perfect excuse. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Not sure what I'd go with but probably a .243 wssm or the .25 wssm in the AR platform.

Edit: Scratch the 25 wssm as you won't be reloading.

I've bought a .25-06 Browning BAR Safari for "Woofs"... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

... hoping for a trip next year.

I have a similar set up as you do - a SR-25 similar rifle as your DPMS. I think it is an ideal set up for wolf given the extremely far range they are always spotted at. The closest wolf I have ever seen was still around 600m away.

I wish I had a story about what a .308 round does to a wolf pelt but as of yet I dont /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

btw - I am using match ammo as my round.

I would stick with my deer rifle .... unless of course you wanted to buy another one. 30-06 or 270 would certainly fit the bill.

+1 on that! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Anything I happen to have with me!!!

Any centerfire round within reason from .243 up. Though from what I have read a .223 seems to work well in Alaska.

I have been thinking hard about an 6.8spc upper as that would make a nice addition to the AR collection.

If I stick with the .308, I wonder what type of damage I would see with something like a standard 150gr hunting load?

Also considering a lightweight .243 just for "walking around".

Planning all this is nearly as much fun as actually going out.

Decisions, decisions..........

I sounds like you enjoy your ar's. since thats the case i think a dpms chambered in the new Hornady 6.5 creedmore sounds like a lot of fun. or a 260rem in the dpms rifle. But the perfect rifle for the perfect hide would have to be a dtech 6.5 wssm. dtech build a heck of a rifle. Lee
