No experience w/ wolves, but sure feels like .243 Win w/ 80-90ish gr HP is the answer. Got me rethinkin', how light could you build one on the AR platform? That .308 has to be a LOAD. On snowshoes??? No thanks. The Savage 99 in 250-3000 it's got nearly 100yrs of experience and should work just fine for another hundred. Top it with a Vx-II 1x4x20mm in a Weaver Pivot Mount or Pachmayer Low Swing and a good set of iron sights and your good to go even after a good dunk in the creek or a snow storm. Yea I've done the first one once and the second more times than I care to remember. If it'll kill deer it'll kill wolves.

I thought he was wanting a medium sized caliber to use in an AR15, my bad. If that is not the case then the 243, 25-06, 260, 308 or MOST anything really would do the job.
If I were to choose a bolt gun it would be my 25-06 hands down, that thing just flat kills stuff dead. If I were to use one of my AR's then it would be the 243WSSM it also does a whicked job of putting down wolf sized animals.
It sounded to me as if he was looking for alternative caliber to his 223 built on an AR15. There are several caliber that would do nicely and several have factory ammo available. 6.5 Grendel, 6.8SPC, 243WSSM, 25WSSM.

After just a few of them get shot they are only going to probably be seen at longer ranges than you are seeing them now. I'd go with the .308 you talked about or something in 6MM with about an 80 to 90 gr. bullet.

In your existing DPMS AR10 platform, you could simply buy either a .243 or .260 upper. Both would be excellent long range choices.
In your AR15, an upper in 6.8 would likely meet your needs.
If you are looking for a whole new gun, a lightweight 6mm Rem, .243 Win, or .260 Rem would definately do the trick quite nicely and pack a whole lot easier.
Outside of the long range competition world most ignore the .260 Rem which is esentially a 6.5/.308. It is an outstanding long range hunting choice.

Middle weight caliber, no reloading, AR platform, 200-300 yards.........I think you just described the 18" 11 twist 6.8SPC with 90 to 110 grain boollits.
That is what I am saving my pennies for right now!!! I am debating the 16" for weight savings. Loupy mk 4 3.5-10 LR, thats my set up!!!!!

Buy an Ar15 in 6.5mm Grendel. They sell Wolf ammo in this caliber and it is accurate at long range. Use the Wolf to catch a wolf, sort of poetic justice!! I got my upper for deer and hogs but if wolves were on the menu, they'd get it too!

Well here goes nothing.
If your looking for the "perfect" wolf rifle I would say that if you use proper shot placement and keep within 75yds the .17HMR would fit the bill nicely.

I have a 25-06 with a 4x16 power scope with target turrets for my own use's. A 100-120 high bc/bonded bullet will work good at all ranges. Regular old boring SP's will work for med. to long range shooting. We "Alaskan's", the one's that do not use 223's with FMJ's, also choose to shoot bolt actions instead of semi's. Ofcourse if range/wind/clean kills are not a concern.... I say why waste the money on an AR just use/buy a good used mini-14 on the cheap.
One last did-bit, Theres a wolfer' for the State up here who use's a 6mm-300 winchester mag with 105gr A-max's. The state will harvest and sell those hides on every so often.
