I've been sporadically checking the used market for another .222 Rem. Prices of used .222 Rem Rifles would choke a horse. I've seen a used Model 700 .222 Rem with an asking price of 1800 bucks. Granted, 1800 bucks probably has the identical value of 300 bucks had when the rifle was made (Inflation is an insidious tax that does serious harm to those living on fixed incomes & those earning least wages.), but I could buy a good-quality, brand new .223 Rem for half that.
 
I had a near mint 1962 L461 Sako Vixen Varmint Heavy Barrel in .222 with a weaver v16 on it for sale on here abt 2yrs ago...couldnt sell it for $1200
 
If you can find one, a 722 Remington in 222 is about the best you can get short of a Sako.

I may have one, I'll look when I get home Monday or Tuesday.
 
Haven't heard of inflation being the worst tax since the Gipper
was Prez, and you're both right.

If I had my heart set on any caliber which no longer has much,
if any, factory support, I would go action/barrel shopping. You
could probably pick up a used 700 cheap. I had a Douglas barrel
put on a 788 for five hundred-sumthin' a couple years ago. It's
22-250 and again shoots MOA(-).
 
The Howa Mini is chambered in 222 Rem and the Sauer 100. If you can find one there are Marlin labelled L-461's that go for half the price of a Sako. There are a number of Euro made bolt guns in 222, Krico, Husquvarna, Anshutz(spendy), Sabbatti plus all the combo guns that they made in Europe in 222. It is quite popular over there also.

One that isn't very appealing but shoots and carrys well is the Stevens 340 and it's variants, Revelation, Springfield's and etc.
 
Keep looking , they are out there. I have picked up a few in the last two years (Rem 600s,722, Sakos) and two weeks ago ran across a Sako L46 for $700 in a small shop. My hoarding won’t help your situation but you will find one. Good luck.

That’s interesting about the Marlin labeled L-461Sako. I learn something new every day. Thanks.
 
A quick check of GB shows 74 bolt action 222s. More than 50 of them under $1000 and many of those in the 450-650 price range. Doesn't seem like such a premium. Even some Sakos under $1000.
 
On small Sako's Marlin, H&R and Browning imported them with their own labels.
 
i've become a 700 fan prior to when big green started making sheet metal triggers and putting on tupper ware stocks. My favorite is the 700 Classic, which can be found unfired/NIB and had in the neighborhood of 8 bills. Since these weren't fancy and a limited run, many were collected and not the best investment due to the plain-Jane stock without cheek piece, and are trickling out of the safes onto the market. They were throated deep, but 40 grain flat based bullets will touch the lands and allow for extra powder to approach .223 case volumes/velocities. With a decent bedding job they can group well under 0.5". The 700 Classics have a simple elegance and to my eye are the best looking things Rem has ever made. Also, the finish doesn't have that super glossy plastic look.
 
222 Rem Mag take any 223 and ream to 22-204 little more boost and available brass
 
I have a near mint 722 Deluxe in .222 and it is an absolute tack driver. If you can find a good one, definitely go for it.
 
Just get yourself a CZ527 in .222. I have one in a varmint model that they discontinued. However they still chamber it in their American model.

I agree with you Andy. If I did not already have the one I do I would target finding a CZ in this caliber for sure!
