The Ultimate crow decoy.

Yesterday evening I walked out to the back yard, turned the FoxPro on for about 10 seconds, and had 8 crows come in. I busted a quick double, winged the third one which fell inside the yard where the dog was. Of course the dog went after it and chased it around the yard but never got a hold of it. This freaked out the crows and they went into a frenzy like I have never seen. I started shooting and they paid me no attention whatsoever. I ran out of ammo, not expecting to need much for a couple of shots I thought I would be getting. Went back into the house for ammo, returned and shot 8 more times. The crows finally got the idea something was not right and went up to the top of a tree nearby, but still DID NOT leave the area. I took a body count and came up with 11. I never turned the caller back on after the initial 10 second calling. The dog chasing the crow was all I needed. BTW, it is a small dog, therefore he had trouble catching the cripple.

You have seen what I call the "blind" frenzy you can get crows in if the conditions are right. I've seen it a couple of times, but the biggest group I ever saw that paid the hunter no attention was about 50 birds. My hunting partner and I were chasing a cripple through some brush trying to catch him or finish him off. His protests brought in every bird within ear shot.

Fun, ain't it?

I once used a 10/22 to get a crow that was in a large flock on the ground in a field. Initially, the rest of the crows became airborne and began to fly away. As the wounded Crow started flopping and crying, it was like watching a school of tropical fish all change direction at once. Those Crows flew over their wounded comrade and began making noise so loud that I couldn't believe it! If I only had a shotgun! They stayed in the area hovering over the dead crow for probably a minute- not even minding me walking toward my prize. I have to admit, those Black Devils were so mad and making so much noise that it intimidated me enough to stop walking toward the dead Crow until the rest of them left! It was pretty exiting!

i kinda do the same thing every year for blackbirds....

i go out around my house collecting alive young starlings and grackles until i have about 7 or 8 and then i head to my grandmas in the country to have some great fun. i grab the .22 and walk back to the middle of the bush and take out one young bird holding it by the skin on the back of its neck. do this for about a minute until the adult birds start comign in. then just break the young birds neck and throw it 15ft infront of u and in no time the adults will be circling you and the dead bird.

u can shoot the adults and the rest of them dont even fly away...

then wen they do finally take off just walk another 100 yards and do the same thing.

in a half days of this kinda huntin i have brought in 50-60 birds....mainly grackles

it may seem cruel but ya gotta remember those ugly black grackles that go into other birds nest and kill their young.

PS. this works really good with crows as well...will be atempting to live trap a young fox or coyote for bait to get momma and daddy yote or fox to come in...take them then goto their dens to put down the young. its kinda cruel but hey...i just found alandowner that has tons of yotes and fox terrorizing his livestock and he told me to annihilate the predadtor population...no matter wut.

Uh..Oh! I see another locked topic session coming.
I'll get mine in now. Ha ha ha
Tucmoto33, I can picture the whole thing. You must have been doubled-over laughing. That is SOME flipp'n funny man. If you can find a dog willing to pick up a crow with it's mouth, it dose'nt matter HOW big he is, worth his weight in GOLD!
Feed'm steak and apple sauce (wash that taste out of his mouth) Post his picture as "Hunting dog of the year" I'm sure nobody will disagree. You got a winner! Bragg him up to the neighbors and definitly bring him with you when ask permission to hunt, you'll make friends fast.
Thanks guy, thats a funny story. Joe

If I can get my son to get a pic with his digital and figure out how to post it, I will display the "Crow Dog" She is about the same size as the crow. I have no idea what breed she is.
