Today my wife lost a bet now i get a new gun but the question is what caliber should i get, i already have a 223,22-250,243,25-06,6-284,and a few magums rifles that i dont shoot much. I was thinking of a 6mm rem or a 270 what do you guys and gals think but the bummer is i have to stay under $750 range. I know you guys all have your likes and dislike so plese fill free to respond this, doesnt happened to well at all!!!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sounds like you have centerfires, and especially varmint centerfires, covered. But who needs another magnum.

How about a smaller capacity centerfire like a 221 Fireball or PPC or BR?

Or how about a real accurate rimfire?

260 Remington or 280 Remington

The old 270 Winchester never showed me much.
6mm Remington is a great cartridge, but Remington only puts it out in a VLS if I remember correctly, and that would still be a great combo.

Clayman

It looks like you are missing a .204 Ruger, .308, or a 270. Your .243 is a 6mm so I wouldn't think you would do much better there.

I am guessing in the panhandle you could see some long shots...a caliber I am looking at getting is the 257 weatherby mag which is pretty close to your 25-06, but a little flatter...check out the ballistics, cuz I was shocked...Ammo is high is the only downer...The Weatherby Vangard Sub MOA Rifle will fit into your price range too!!!

How d'you ever get through life without a 30 caliber rifle? A .308 is a must in everybody's safe, and even a 30-30 is almost a prerequisite.

On the other hand, use the bet money to buy your wife something she wants, and you may get two new rifles.

My wife said that scopes was not in the bet and shotguns was not mentioned either sorry guys i already thought of that, but the varmit scene is what i cover the best its takes up 98.999 percent of my thoughts and my time except for work, baby and the endless hoeny do's i have i would like something 270 and below. I wanted a nightforce but that got a stern not heck no but h-ll no very quick. that is why i am torn at which caliber to choose?????????????

Sorry nmleon already have a 30-30 and a 300wsm and the bet was which is taller a yard stick or a 55 gallon drum i will not tell anybody because i lost the same bet a bout 10 yrs ago to someone else but the wife did not know that HE!HE!HE!

I thought the same thing but the wind in the darn tx panhandle i would think would just kill the smaller caliber below a 223 right???

You might be surprized with the accuracy of a .204 in the wind. Get ahold of someones and try it out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I'd go with either a .204 or a .308.

I hope to have these calibers in my collection someday:
.204 (had one, sold it, wish I hadn't)
.223 (already have it)
.243 (next purchase coming soon)
.270 (for future Western hunting hopefully)
.308 ( " " " " " )

i am the recent owner of a TC .204, shot the other day at 500 yards, just for kicks, it was relatively windy, 10-15 maybe a gust of 20 here and there and i was surprised at how well the .204 handled it, my buddy was shooting 22-250 which kept tighter groups, but i thought the .204 held it's own reasonably well....fun gun to shoot, around averaged priced ammo.

You didn't mention what style your guns are, if they are all bolt actions maybe you should get something in the AR family? Or maybe a combo 12ga/223? Both those items are on my "to get" list.

peace.
