Thermacell Bug Repellent

It works really well. I have seen skeeters fly within a few feet of me while using it and then they just turn around and fly off. I had never been bothered by a skeeter when using mine. They are money well spent.

+1 on the thermacell. Our small game season opens on 8/15 and it is hot & humid and the bugs are terrible. I won't go into the woods w/o one. I turn it on, hang it from my pack, belt, or something and use it even when walking.

we use ours when we spend the night on the river in the boat and it works wonders. the only fault i can see with it is that it takes about 10 to 15 minutes to heat up properly but its well worth it when it does start to work. no skeeter in the right mind will come anywhere near it

they are the very best money that you could spend!

Just be sure that you get plenty of refills and it is always a good idea to get a second one incase a hunting buddy is in need of one also.

Just a tip: Buy your extra fuel cartridges at a big box or beauty supply stores. They are sold as fuel canisters for curling irons, are cheaper than the ones with the Thermacell label and are the exact same thing.

I cant agree more the Thermocell is the #1 thing I take into the woods with me.. I have been using mine for about 2 years and have yet to have a hunt of any sort spoiled by bugs!!! Last archery season I was hunting from a brush pile blind and had 2 whitetail does feeding about between 16 and 65 yards down wind of me for about an hour and the thermocell never bothered them.............

yes they are great. They seem to help with ticks and chiggers as well. I do know for a fact that ants will avoid them as well. We have fire ants here in Texas, setting the thermacell near your feet will keep them off of you as well.

they are a must hog hunting. There are two things that have to have water to live hogs and skeeters, where there is one there is the other.

To all you folks that have them:
Do they work effectively in a breezy condition?
Do they have to be in the horizontal postion to operate?
Any strong drawbacks?
Are those refills Weasel is talking about easily found?
Don't mean to hijack the thread....
Thanks for your answers.

they work best in the wind if they are upwind of you.
they can be horizontal or verticle, in fact they have pouches that hold them to your body in the verticle position.
Animals do smell them in close quarters however they wont be close if you are swatting skeeters.
refills can be found at walmart, or cabellas.

they do get warm, but not warm enought to burn you or catch anything on fire unless you touch the metal plate which would be dificult to do. I turn mine off and put it right in my pack.

I use them all the time. They work the best of any repellent I have ever tried.

This subject has been hashed over many times, not to say it should not be. I'm just stating that, because I don't think I ever saw a post the did not praise them. You can't go wrong getting one or more.

Oh yeah. Thanks Weasel-UT for the tip on fuel canisters /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gifI'm getting a hair cut today and I will check with the shop. I always have more inserts left than fuel. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I think they are great. The instructions that come with the machine say not to use it in the vertical position. This is confirmed by the instructions included with the carrying case (which is also worth the $10 BTW). They'll work in a slight breeze, but not windy conditions. Of course, when the wind picks up, the bugs probably won't be as bad. I know I can smell the insecticide burning, so I'm sure critters can. Of course, if they smell the ThermaCell, they smell you - hunt the wind. For what it's worth, my wife and I have both shot bears over bait with ThermaCells running.

I gotta check into Weasel's fuel canister suggestion.

I'll add another positive on these as well. I became a believer during our opening duck season, we had two running in our blind, you could see a literal cloud of mosquitos flying back and forth in front of us wanting in but they'd hit that invisible wall and couldn't come in the blind. Then we'd send the dog out for birds and she'd have 10 on her back when she came in and they'd peel off as soon as she got back in the blind.
The only downside was she was my dog, so if she couldn't find the bird, I was always volunteerd to go out and direct her....sprint out, throw some rocks, sprint back /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif cloud of death hot on my heels.

thx Glenn for you report.
If a man had his clothes treated with permilone (tick treatment). You should be good to go. I may have to give a couple a try. I got a camping trip with my daughter planned.

I just ordred a Thermacell unit from BassPro, it took 4 days to arrive on my door step. I got a 4-pack refill kit with it as well. My last hunt was absolutely miserable, I got about 60 mosquito bites on my face and hands.
