Thermacell?

Do these things work? I want something besides those danged oily, stinkin' sprays to get away from skeeters when I'm outdoors. They are advertised as scent free which is awesome for hunting purposes. How "scent free" is scent free? I bet it ain't yote proof but is it usefully non-stanking?

I have never tried it! but I'm sure it works to some degree! I believe it could be a useful tool!

A couple of my hunting buddies came to the hunt club with the thermacells last year. That was the first time I saw one and I can tell you that they work and I will have one this year myself. The one thing about them is that they work well when stationary like in the tree stand. But I don't think you can use it while walking. But my biggest interest is in my tree stand during the bow season. Both of my buddies say that they don't think the deer can smell it or if they do they don't care. I'd say getting by a deers nose is pretty good.

I have a Thermacell, and it works GREAT... I also have video of 4 deer feeding under a stand while a buddy was hog hunting... he had his Thermacell on, and the deer hung around for over 20 minutes, then went and bedded down a handful of yards from the tree he was in... it's all on video... they never noticed the smell, or at least if they did, it didn't bother them... I don't know how coyotes would react, but the mosquitoes DEFINITELY don't like it...

I frequent a board that has a number of Florida hunters on it. They say Thermacells work great. They are stand hunting in places that are thick with mosquitoes.

Off their web site:

Although the ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent is most effective against mosquitoes, it has also been shown in field testing to be effective against black flies (Prosimulium hirtipes and Simulium venestrum), no-see-ums (Culicoides, also known as biting midges), and phlebotomine sand flies

Ohhhh boy, I may have to get one of these! It may not be so bad now that Arizona's gotten some rain, but last summer the flies made me bonkers! Almost left early they were so bad (until it finally rained anyway). They were impossible.

May be worth the investment to try it.

I just picked one up for $22. I checked their web site, and refils for butane and pads will run you about $4 a day, if you use it 12 hours a day. You know what? Fine by me, the flies can get that horrible. It does say on their web site and on the package it's effective against common black flies. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

If you check their web site, there's a store locator on there. ThermaCell

Now I just need to find some flies and give this thing a test drive. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I did check a couple other message boards first, and everyone swears by them. Not one negative comment regarding it's effectiveness that I could find.

It's not a very good weapon against ticks and chiggers, just airborne insects... it's smoky vapors fill the air around you, so it doesn't affect anything on the ground...

I have had a Thermacell for 3 yrs. now, use it mostly in the spring while turkey hunting. Just turn it on and it emits a smokey invisible barrier at least 8-10feet all around you. I was in Alabama last year and was hunting with a friend down there. We couldn't set still for swatting mosquitoes. I had forgot that I had the Thermacell in my back vest, pulled it out, laid it between us, and in 3 mins., the mosquitoes were gone! It has to put off a smell that I feel deer and predators would smell....gobblr addict

I can smell a thermacell and if I can then I guess a deer or coyote can. Whether or not they associate the smell with a hunter will likely depend on how many hunters use it in your area... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

But then... Humans stink anyway so adding another stink to our smelly presence isn't likely to change much... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

Here in Florida I have several friends that use Thermacells and they SWEAR by them... I can't stand the odor. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Im sure the product works. I might be concerned about inhaling these vapors / chemicals in the air around me. But then again being coated in deet can't be all to healthy either. Damned skeeters!
