Most of ya'll know I just acquired a Savage Mark II, I was showing it off to my neighbor, and explaining my plans. He keep going on and on about his Ruger 10/22, which I'll admit is a reasonably nice firearm. Just the same grade as what Walmart usually carries, no shame there. So he spouts off he could take me on the range with it... Ohhhkkaaay is my reply, he keeps it up I finally say Yeah your right you will probably smoke me. And I'm not sure but I think the scope I just put on the parallax adjustment is out, But I need to see so it will be perfect opportunity to check it.
Say how about we go on Saturday he asks (this was yesterday), well I got to do XYz he added, ok so what about afternoon I asked? He agrees...
He gets home I go down there, he is fooling around wrapping up things. I said OK I'm heading to the range when you get done just meet me down there if you feel like it and want to shoot.
So I get a bench, then he shows up to shoot on my bench which I just fired the first group to see where I need to adjust for 50 yards. Sure enough the scope is not focusing the parallax at 50 correctly... aiming square is blurry, reticle sharp .. bummer No problem I'll pull the scope later and send it in. After firing that group (bear in mind this is the very first group I've fired from this gun) he shows up. I had just covered my 1st group with masking tape, walked back to the bench made the adjustments to the scope.
He is still whipping around his man card with the Ruger, Ok sir, Take your time and zero in I said.. he shoots. After that he was like well still what to shoot against me beaming? I asked if he was ready? sure he replies. I let him go first but explain we are shooting 20 round groups @ 50 yards unlimited time, unless you object. He was fine with it he lays in his 1st group finishes, so I take the bench, fire my group.
Which the range called a cease fire we walked down his group measure 4 inches mine all stacked in a 1" by 1" square. He goes as we make it back to the bench well I don't get competitive until there is money on the table say about $100.00... my response was I'm the same way as I'm reaching in my wallet laying out $600.00 in $100.00 bills asking if that was competitive enough laughing. The look was priceless he was white as a sheet. I said same group size, same time limits.. you first. He fires, I fire, again another cease fire walk down looking at the target sure enough his group was indeed better, 3 - 1/2" mine 1/2".
We walk back to the bench, he was stammering. I looked at him and said so you don't have the money to pay up?? no was his weak reply. I laughed telling him don't worry about it. It was just fun, enough to hang out and shoot.
So we continued to shoot and talk me telling him that his groups wasn't bad considering the ammo he was shooting. I told him that every Ruger 10/22 I've ever owned shot Federal auto-match really well, he should try some. We go on a bit more, finally he says OK if I shoot your gun before I could reply he already has mine on the bench bipod setup loading my magazines again with the exact ammo he shot in his Ruger. rounds go left low and about a 1 3/4" group out of my Savage. He was sitting there babbling, I asked if I could try his Ruger, which I waited until he said yes. I dug around in my ammo box finding a box of CCI Select I fire a 20 round string into a group 1-1/2" with his rifle standing position . Babbling increased, he asked if Academy down the road had the Federal ammo I stated, I said probably. He picked up 2 boxes after he left the range telling me come to his house and we can have a adult beverage......
