I have a cat like that. It has lived in my yard for 5 years, I feed it every day and have never been able to touch it. I did catch it and had her spayed. She sits on a patio chair outside the patio door and watches TV and us. The closest I've ever got to her is two feet when she comes up to get her food, she won't even eat if I'm watching her. She even checks the window to make sure I'm not sneaking a peek.
