thinking about a .338 lapua! talk me in or out of it!

338 Lapua Reloaded about $3.25 a shot. If you buy things in bulk.

A long action 6.5x284 or long action plain old 284. Will get things done at that range.

The Lapua is a great round.Very few people however really can get the intended use of it though.Trying to say it is more than needed by most people. It is way more than what you want for deer if you plan to eat any of it.I sold mine to a guy who wanted to play with a pretty big round and he had millions to spend so ammo was not a problem for him.I was almost afraid to shoot it where I live, takes more than a wet phone book laying on a light pole to stop that one.The round is awesome though. If I lived where I could shoot 1200+ without so much trouble I would still have mine.

Dont forget the 264 win mag deer killing machine.

The 338 lapua is a overkill for whitetail at 800-900 yards and sure other rounds will do it but the 338 will rock them at that yardage. It's just fun. I did alot of load work for my buddies savage. We took it to 800 yards on paper and it stayed under MOA. He took a whitetail this year a 634 and it did not take a step... Love putting them in the dirt!!!!! Jason

308 is a fine round, but you can get better ballistics with different rounds, the 260 is superior in the wind with a lighter bullet compared to the 308, the 7mm's just flat out kick a 308's a$$, and you move up to the 300wm you may or may not be shootin the same round, but introducing higher velocities is going to give you a better b.c. (even though there is more drag) on most LR projo's.

I have the savage 110 in a 338 Lapua. Recoil is no different than a hard gitting 30.06 with the brake on it. It really isn't bad at all. Its just bad on the wallet because it is fun to shoot!!

Try running it with a 338 Shadow LM TI suppressor, and it's an all day gun.

I was trying to make the same decision as you and in the end I went with a 300 win mag instead of the 338. Cost was one of the major factors. I know a few guys that shoot the 300 win mag out past 1500 yds and that is more then enough for me. Another thing to think about is weight. I think the same rifle that I got in a 338 is 2 lbs heavier. Doesn't sound like much until you hike it up and down the mountains for a day or two.

Talk you out of it. OK. Do you have access to a 1000 yard plus range with adequate backstop? Do you have a crazy amount of $ to spend on ammo? An extra $1500 laying around for an adequate scope for this gun? Are you in shape enough or even want to carry a gun This heavy around? What are you planning to hunt with it? Those would be my arguments against it. That said, I bought the Barrett .338LM !!!!!!
