Thinking about a new shotgun?

My soninlaw whent hunting with me with a single shot but it dosent work right so i gave him my newengland shotgun i just got so im thinking about getting a mossberg shotgun anyone better than the other?
 
I'm a Remington 870 guy myself but know a few that use the Mossberg and they seem to like them. I think theirs are the 500 or the 835. Both would be dual purpose guns.

better yet a gas gun to soak up the recoil of hard hitting coyote loads. walmart 390 for 500 bucks with stock shims comes to mind for a cheap one.
 
I LOVE my Mossberg 835 for turkey hunting but prefer my Benelli or Remington 870 for more of the all purpose (ducks, geese, dove, etc.) stuff. My Mossberg is the only shotgun that I have that will shoot 3.5" shells otherwise I probably wouldn't have bought it and would have just used one of the two others.
 
The 870 with either the R3 or supercell recoil pads are pretty nice as far as recoil goes. My wife really likes her 870 with the R3 pad. The problem with gas guns is somtimes you are limited in what loads you can shoot. IE most Magnum guns dont like the light dove/target loads. Get the 870 super-mag and let 'em grow into it. They are $320ish at walmart.
 
Love my 835 for deer turkey and predators. Get a kicks gobbling thunder choke and shoot anything from #4 to OO and anything within 60 is toast
 
I bought a mossberg 930 semi auto last summer. It's been a great gun. Comes with a shim kit to make it fit just right. Can't say a bad thing about it. Especially for the price. Highly recommend it.
 
What do you want to use it for? Hard core birding? If so, get a semiauto that'll soak up some recoil. If it's for less frequent use, there's nothing wrong with an entry level pump like the Mossberg or 870. I shoot a Mossberg 500 "turkey gun" for coyotes. It has the short ported barrel and is camo-painted. I wouldn't want to shoot heavy 3" loads through it all day, but for 3-5 shots at coyotes, it's a dandy little shotgun. Mossberg has a good reputation for being a solid, working gun. Of course, the 870 has the same reputation. Either would likely serve you well.
 
I have several 12 ga. shotguns but use two all the time. Remington 870 wally world special with 25" barrel and camo along with a 3 1/2" chamber. My other is a Stoeger 2000 with a 26" barrel and camo with a 3" chamber.

Both work great and will serve you well. I have owned several Mossbergs over the years and never could get one that worked quite right. I know they make good guns I just can't seem to buy one :)
 
The hardest kicking gun I've ever fired was an early 835 with 3.5-in. loads. Worse than a .460 Weatherby. Mossbergs are lighter than Remingtons and kick accordingly.

Got an Xtrema2 for the big shells but use 3.5 only rarely. Not recoil shy; used a .375 H&H to kill two whitetail this year. But Mossberg pumps and 3.5s are too much.

Remington is doing a Turkey/Predator 11/87 this year. It'd be pretty easy to build something similar off a pawnshop 11/87 or 1100. People sell them when they start jamming, simply because they don't know how to clean the gas system.
