Thinking about a yote rifle, open discussion on .223 WSSM for yotes

If I did want to keep the coats, what would I use?

Any 22 center fire can be loaded with the right bullets to save pelts. Sometimes a 6mm (243) will be easy on fur, but its more hit or miss with that.

Frankly MO coyotes probably are not worth the time to skin, especially now were only the better hides are supposed to be selling this year, and for less then normal.

If it were me, and I lived in a southern state (I know Missouri isn't that far south) I would be shooting a .243, or frankly my deer rifle, loaded with the same bullets I plan to hunt deer with, and call it live game practice. I do that now as is, during the fall when the pelts are not prime yet.

I shot my last one with a .308 and it smoked him. R5 Mil Spec stainless Remmington is awesome. I think a Tikka in a 7mm08 would be an interesting choice also especially if you hand load, if you dont then .308 I was really drawn to the WSSM and WSM stuff when it first came out but the only one I bought was a 300 WSM and the muzzle blast on it is horid but Ive loaded up some 125 gr for coyotes and Im anxious to see what it does to them.

Three strikes against the 223 WSSM IMO.

Resale...Strike one

Rebarrel options....Strike two

Simply too much overbore for limited gains....Strike three

But remember, we all have different criteria. That's what makes this game so fun.

Not bothering to mention those already listed by others. I've had bad experience with it particularly with Winchesters. Simply going on two examples I've worked with tells me... Pass on the Winnie's Coyote. Man those two were BAD!

Does the 223WSSM work? You bet. Just not for me nor anyone who asks my opinion.

YMMV,

Scott

ps..this isn't worth a tinkers dam, but a relative whose with Browning opines the WSSM's are dead men walking. Simply driven by marketing he thinks. Maybe the AR platform will breath new life into them. Who knows, just an addition to your "Gee Whiz" collection.

Thats cause FNH USA (where the new model 70's are made) doesn't use marketing gimic's to sell rifles like Remington, or at least till Cerberus buys them too anyway. Browning bought Winchester to late to stop the WSM, WSSM line or it would have never existed. The only choice Browning had was to build a decent rifle in the caliber Winchester had started with.

I don't care if the bolt guns die off, I just want a 25 wssm upper, and for Winchester to build brass for a enough more years that I can stock up what I will need to get buy from now on...

MPFD,
So FNH USA doesn't think the WSSM's were any kind of real advancement over cartridges all ready on the market? Well at least Winchester Mod. 70 will be around now. They are a good rifle, I wonder what will happen to the sub $500 guns they used to make?

Thats not exactly what I meant. FNH is making high quality guns in the calibers people want to buy. Not mass producing cheap rifle's in new calibers to get people to replace their already capable calibers with new similar cartridges, so they can sell someone a rifle that hasn't worn out their old one yet. No one but collector's usually buy something that they already have one of that works fine...
