Thinking of a 25-06

I tried your load when you first got that rifle and mine didn't seem to like it at all. I guess I should try again and play with seating depth..

I've had a Savage 110 heavy barreled 25-06 for many years, and taken plenty of yotes, deer, hogs, and even a few prairie dogs with it. It doesn't care for bullets under 100 grain, but it will print 100-120 grain bullets in the .2-.5 range groups all day long until it copper fouls bad.
I shoot Sierra Gamekings and Matchkings as well as the Berger Hunting VLD's out of it.

I had a 700 CDL in 25-06. It shot decent but not great. I never did get 100 grain BT to group better than 1.25". The best factory load was Fusion 120s. The best handload was Sierra 90 gr Blitzkings with RL 19.

My son's Tikka outshoots it hands down. 52.6 grains IMR4831 behind the Sierra Blitzkings will consistently group under 1/2" for us.

"Varmint wise is it good in the wind and such? Be good for a nice alternate to .223?" Perfect alternate!

"One thing I've read is it flies like a 22-250 which sounds awesome with a much larger case and a larger bullet!"

Trajectory may be similar to a certain distance, but the .25 pills
are not effected nearly as bad as the .22's in cross wind situations.
I opted to get a .25-06 after shooting prairie dogs with a .22-250
for that reason, and there was a remarkable difference in hits!
Only way to get around that with .22's is go custom with something
like 1:8 twist and shoot heavier bullets. Don't believe you plan on
going there.

I am getting fantastic groups with a max load of R#19, win primer, win case, and the Speer 100g BTSP is the most accurate bullet for my Rem 700. This load is unreal accurate at 300 yards, hard to believe that a non custom rifle can shoot this well. This Rem 700 likes the bullet jumping .040, and I bump the shoulders on the case after every firing, and have got 12 firings on the cases so far without trimming or full length sizing.

This barrel does not like Ballistic tips of any weight, but also loves the 87g Speer sp with a max load of R#19 also, tiny groups!

Mine too has done it's best with a good charge of RL19 and a 87 to 90 gr bullet. I use my rifle for groundhogs in OH so shoot mostly the lighter bullets.

25-06 is a good cartridge. I have killed several whitetails and some coyotes with one. Depending on load, it can tear a pretty big hole in a coyote.

You might also look at a 6.5 Creedmoor. Very good caliber for both deer and coyotes. I have been impressed with mine so far. And if you plan on reloading, there are a lot of bullet options in .264.

Keith must have stock in Speer! He recommended the Speer 6mm 85 gr SPBT, as the end all antelope bullet.

I loaded it in my 6mm WOA, but never killed an antelope with it. It sure shoots itty bitty groups on paper though, and a couple of WY p-dogs died in front of it...I just had to check accuracy on small targets.

I've been a fan of 25/06 for many years as well. My current one is a Ruger M77 in a 26" heavy barrel. It shoots factory 120gr Fusion pretty well, I've taken several deer with the Fusions and one elk. I haven't had any issues with not getting exits, in fact the last deer I shot with it was quartering to me slightly at 450 yards so I had to hold on the front shoulder. It went right through the shoulder, clipped the heart and exited behind the far shoulder. I was pretty impressed that it went though the shoulder and still exited at that distance. The elk was a chance encounter, I was actually deer hunting with my daughter when we happened to run into a legal bull. The bullet went clear through behind both shoulders at 155 yards and the bull went about 100 yards before going down. With that being said, I don't consider the wound channel to be big enough for elk and it wouldn't be something I would choose to specifically hunt elk with unless it was my only option. I watched the one I shot go down as it was in an open clear cut, but I checked the blood trail out of curiosity. It was non existant, not a single drop hit the ground.
It is definitely not very fur friendly.

Anyway, since you are going to reload I think the .260 Remmington would be something to consider as well.

Okay so I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a CDL(pun intended haha). Be here early next week. I'll post pics and if I can some range results. Got some PPU 100 grain soft points to start with. I'll shoot them up to sight in and reload with Sierra 75 HPs. Posted in the reload section asking about 25-06 loads. I'm excited!

I have a Mauser with a Douglas barrel in 25-06 with a vintage RedField Lo-Pro 3x9 scope .
The Redfield will be getting replaced as its not my preferred choice but there's something about the old scope I kinda like.
It'll go in the safe for a bit.
The rifle was passed down to me a few years ago.
I'm still hunting for as many off the shelf rounds in various weights that the rifle likes best.
I'll be checking on a few that have been mentioned in this thread.
Thanks for the insight.

Don't forget about the vintage rifles out there. There are some nice shooting used rifles available.

Got it! Thanks for all the information and advice here to lead me to this decision! Very happy with it seems well put together and no issues so far! I did take it out shoot but weather was bad and I pulled getting used to the gun so no real targets yet! Will post some later. Mounted a FF 2 4.5x14 I had should make a nice all around scope for it.
