and its not just Garand's...Contrary to some folks belief that semi-autos are not as accurate as bolt guns, while the Garand is capable of rapid fire, they can also be tuned to be very competitive to bolt guns.
and its not just Garand's...
everyone acts like ar's are only some cr@p milsurp m16's that got shot out in 'nam, recycled in korea, and then had the uppers slapped on a modern AR lower and sold en-mass.
like dude... its not 1977 anymore. welcome to 70 years of refinement of the platform/system. i mean realistic expectatsions, we all can agree that a $500 off the rack ar isnt very likely to shoot like that, but there are lots of companies offering match grade rifles / uppers, or at the very least barrels, that will compete with the overwhelming majority* of bolt guns on the market, even many aftermarket/semi-custom match grade bolt rifles.
again realistic expectation... its even a $3000-$5000 custom ar going to keep up with a super high end f-class rifle? probably not.
Those are great guns. My old DMPS still drives tacks.View attachment 31758
IIRC this Bushmaster predator was not a lot over a grand (less scope) and it did OK out of the box, and my hunting partner shot a mirror image 5 shot group @ 1 o'clock inside the square after I shot this one. Admittedly that was a at least a dozen years ago, haven't kept up on current prices. "Friends don't let friends shoot inaccurate rifles".

Nice Shooting HM, that's impressive !!!! My grandpa was a paratrooper, jumped in on Normandy. He knocked a German off a bicycle at 800yds with a Rem 1918. Long poke with Irons. He brought back a Luger, its a very cool piece.Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with a good bolt gun either. Gotta love an accurate rifle, no matter which flavor.

The mouse guns are not quite as easy for me to keep 'em in the center at long range, but the 30-06 keeps 'em close near or far, especially when the wind is funky.

Thanks. He knocked a German off a bicycle at 800yds with a Rem 1918. Long poke with Irons.
Shooting irons is a different game. I can see the aperture front helping a lot at distance. My dad has a 1918 it has a peep rear and blade front. I remember shooting it as a little kid and it knocking the milk off my lips.Thanks.
800 is a long poke w/irons, especially service rifle sights. I can't remember the sights on the 1918. I really liked the thin front on the 03's when I was young and could see them. The Garands came with a much broader front, but the NM version was just a tad thicker than the 03 sight, (.052" from memory). The NM sight was great until I reached late '50s and I had to quit service rifle matches and switch to the bolt gun which allowed for aperture front. The aperture front and rear on a round aiming point is much easier target than someone on a bicycle, moving, or even just "fixin" to move.
A lot of folks find it hard to believe, but I shot better @ 600 w/irons (front and rear aperture) than I did with the same rifle w/20x Unertl target scope. Might have been a different story w/a variable power scope, however. I tried F class with the scope and switched back to irons because 20x was too much magnification; target looked like a bowl of jello in the mirage, which made it difficult for me to hold center. Admittedly, lost a few points due to missing mirage switch with irons, but missed more w/the scope. Think that less magnification would have helped, but I did OK w/irons.Shooting irons is a different game. I can see the aperture front helping a lot at distance.
