This Parent is Part of the Problem

This is the kind of parent that I used to hate to deal with in Juvenile situations.... Rather than taking a position that the kid was wrong in the first place, they try to shift blame on the person that catches them...Whether prank or something more serious...IMHO, there are a lot of 14 year olds that can hurt you just as easily and an adult...

NY man faces charges after tackling teen prankster

BETHLEHEM, N.Y. (AP) — A homeowner in his underwear chased down and tackled one of four teens who rang his doorbell and fled in a late-night prank called "ding dong ditch," leading to charges against the homeowner but not the boy.

The teen was bloodied by the takedown. The homeowner, Daniel Van Plew, and the boy's family disagree over the amount of force used and about where the tackle occurred, which could make a difference under the laws that define self-defense.

Van Plew, 37, told police in this upscale suburb south of New York's capital that he was preparing to go to bed shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday when four teenagers pounded on his back door, rang his front doorbell and then ran.

Van Plew said he feared for the safety of his two children and his wife. He chased after the teens, caught the 14-year-old and then made him wait in his home while he called police. The teen suffered a cut on his elbow, a bruise over his eye and a bloody lip, according to the police report.

"There's no winner in this kind of a thing, right? It's just a bad deal," Van Plew told WCBS-TV.

Van Plew caught the boy on his property, according to a police report, but the boy's father told a newspaper that the boy was tackled off the property. New York self-defense laws give people more leeway when defending themselves on their own property.

There is also a discrepancy between Van Plew and the father over how much force was used and why.

The boy's father told the Times Union of Albany that Van Plew pinned his son's arm behind his back, applied pressure and threatened to kill him if he tried to escape. Van Plew's lawyer told the newspaper that the boy claimed to have a knife in his pocket and threatened to kill the homeowner. The boy didn't have a knife.

Van Plew, a pharmaceutical executive, has been charged with endangering a child and harassment. He must answer the misdemeanor and violation charges in town court on Aug. 3. He wasn't charged with assault because the boy's injuries were not serious enough, Bethlehem police Lt. Robert Berben said.

The teen, who is not being identified, faces no charges. He initially was charged with trespass, but that's a violation- level offense that can't be pursued against juveniles in family court, according to Berben.

The case has been referred to the Albany County District Attorney's office.

The home is in a relatively new subdivision of small but upscale homes that sell for $350,000 to $400,000. There was no answer at Van Plew's two-story house on Thursday.

Don't they have a Juvenile Court for Criminal Acts in NY???

And we wonder why we are going to he## in this country. IF we had done this as kids(I'm 68)(and we did those things as well) and got caught? besides the butt kick from the home owner my dad would of added his version of injury to the personal insult list of yours truly. We ALWAYS knew the ramafications of our bad behavior. Today? unless the kid stabbed or shot the home owner he/she gets away with it. And, even if they did injure the home owner? it was because peer pressure made them do it, nobody loves them, and they are just mis-understood kids. They, then, grow up and reproduce!!!

If it were me, after being dragged through the "mud" like that, I would make a sign stating "Next time I will shoot the bastard". In defense of the homeowner of course.

Most people today don't take responsibility for their own actions, and they are not made to by the rest of society, why would we even expect them to take responsibility for their offspring or to make their offspring take responsibility for own actions ? When we have teen idols and sports hero's who can break the law repeatedly with no consequences from the courts why should their son or daughter be any different.

Yeah my Dad would have kicked my tail over there to apologize then he would have reminded me of my bad behavior with a loss of whatever he felt like for as long as he felt like. Then he would have let my MOM at me.... And he did these things because he loved me.

Many parents are blind to their kids faults. Matthew Coy Steelman was caught in his highschools restroom with a disassembled .12 sawed off shotgun. The Judge in Pinal County let him loose to go live in his grandmothers back yard garage apartment so he could attend Florence Highschool.

On a three day weekend, Matt borrowed his Step Dad's truck, got drunk and high, and while driving his pregnant girl friend back to her home in Superior Arizona, he tried to pass a rig and hit head on a Federal Prison Guard, killed him, flipped the truck killing both his girlfriend and her unborn child. Automatic 5 years flat time as he was on Felony Probation when he did this.

Naturally, the parents insisted it was not Matt's fault but the Pinal County Adult Probation Department. Real good logic there!

I hope the homeowner is completely cleared of any charges except lawful self-defense which is not a crime but a duty.

It's often a good thing to know what kind of financial and political power there is working on both sides. Remember ol OJ Simpson the pride of the prison yard and a lifer for sure who deserves much more than he got. Rotting in prison suits that slob just right on target!

Good hunting!

I just went thru a similar situation a few weeks ago, 11PM at night I got up and was getting a drink of water when I noticed 4 older kids standing almost on my deck right next to my patio door. Well we have had some vandalism problems this summer in the neighborhood and not knowing what they were up to I chased one of them down pretty quick. Turns out they were ding dong ditching our neighbors house during the whole last week and watching from my back yard.

My wife not knowing what was going on other than I took off after somebody in our backyard called 911, when they showed up the officer took his name then started reading me the riot act for grabbing this 15 year old kid for no reason. I told him about the problems we have had in the area but he didn't want to hear it so I ended up telling him to go pound sand.

To be honest we were both lucky I didn't greet them with my .45 that late at night....

Needless to say my old man would have kicked my [beeep] and good if I got caught doing something like that.
