Thumbhole stocks on mag rifles

Anyone have any experience with thumbhole stocks on magnum rifles? I'm considering a boyds Varmint thumbhole for my remington 700 300 win mag. Are these stocks tough enough for the recoil and will they hold up when you take a spill on the mountain? Every now and again I take a good spill and land on my rifle and I wouldn't want to end up with a 2 piece stock up on the mountain.

IMHO, a thumbhole stock does not make for a very comfortable walking rifle. The forend of the stock is usually beefier than a sporter style stock and doesnt contour to the hand very well if you are walking about carrying the gun from the middle down at your side. Then there is the weight issue; a thumbhole is usually heavier. Also I think it gets a little tiring when you are walking at "port-arms" for lack of a better term. I walk a lot of mountainside terrain here in WV and although I love thumbhole stocks for target shooting, groundhog shooting, and predator setups, I dont care for them when deer hunting. The best walking stock coming and going right now (in my opinion of course) is the Hogue overmolded rubber stock. Very comfy for the walker and a pleasure to shoot with.

they can take more than a pistol grip stock can, recoil is tamed more also and the verticle pistol grip is easier to shoot better. I have 4 and love them

You might take a look at Richards Micro-fit dual grip thumbhole stock. This is designed to be shot and carried either as a standard stock or a thumbhole stock. The stock is designed as a standard sporter with a standard sporter forearm. It is very comfortable used either way and as a thumbhole it will help with the recoil.

This is a true sporter style instead of a wide forend varminter stile and is much more appropriate for a big game hunting rifle than the Boyds.

For ruggedness I'd opt for the laminated wood. This style of stock is one of the strongest stocks available as it's built of glued up laminations much like hardwood plywood. You can get the laminated stocks in several different colors. I personally like the black and gray color. Here's the link.

That dual grip looks like it might be the way to go for a walking thumbhole stock. Very interesting and thank you for the post Bob.

This a big enough mag to illustrate the use of thumbholes, its a 7mm Allen Mag, (7mm/338 Lapua Imp.) runs a 160 nosler downrange at 3700 fps

Thanks for the help everyone. I think I'm going to get one of the boyds VIP unfinished laminate stocks. The price is right. I'll finish it and then learn how to bed it properly.
