Tick Repellent

Went out today for a bit, no luck with the coyotes, but did bring home a couple of ticks. Do you guys use any tick repellent in the warmer months or just get them off when you get out of the field. My concern would be the extra odor. Thanks

this is what I spray my camo clothes with, seems to work, not brought any bugs home yet: spray
odorless & says its good for 6 weeks or 6 washings, guess I need to spray again !

I use a couple of different "brands" of Permethrin. Sawyer, Repel, etc. What ever is on sale. Works well. Actually kills ticks and fleas if they get on you.
Follow the instructions. Don't spray it on your skin, just on your clothes. It made a buddy of mine pretty sick. Once it dries no problem, even if your clothes get wet.

A mesh mosquito suit sprayed with Permethrin is the way to go IMO. The Permethrin bonds to the mesh (or your clothes) and will last thru several washings.

I used Sawyer permethrin spray on clothing until Academy quit carrying and I was forced to mix my own. Sawyer spray bottle shows .5% (.005) permethrin active and 99.5% inert ingredients. I found 1 pint of 10% solution at a local feed store for not much more than 1 can of .5% and mix as follows.

.5% solution:
1 oz. of 10% permethrin + 20 oz. of water = about 1.3 pint.

I store in an 8# (gallon) black plastic jug, as some chemicals can be diluted by light; not sure about permethrin, but better safe than sorry.

Instructions on Sawyer bottle cautions against contact w/eyes or skin! Spray clothing until moist and allow to dry at least two hours (4hrs. if very humid) before wearing. Pay special attention to cuffs, socks, etc. Re-apply after 6 weeks or 6 washings. Their 24oz. bottle treats 4 complete sets of clothing according to label.

Haven't had a tick since I started spraying clothing.

I have done the exact same thing for turkey hunting. It was less than $10 for the pint and should make 10 gallons of juice. I diluted it 1 ounce to 16 ounces of water. No bugs for me. It does have an odor though. But if you use the wind like you should, it doesn't matter. No ticks is better.

I do the same as the above two guys. It's cheap at a feed store and keep a spray bottle in my truck. It's magic on ticks and chiggers.

My wife is a vet tech and was invited to a dinner seminar on new Tick products. Since there was a dinner I got to go also. I do not remember the name of the product. But it worked great in their reviews just a drop on a tick infested dog would run all the ticks off the animal in a short period of time.
It was not for human use.
I told them if they would make that for use by humans the company would make mint. They looked at me like I had two heads. I explained I had just read an article in an outdoor magazine about Hunter's using tick collars around their legs and other places trying to keep ticks off while out hunting.
They asked me a few questions and said they weren't even aware of the human problem and would look into it.

I don't think it ever went anywhere but at least I got an expensive Steak out of it.

I load up on chemicals this time of year. I'm with those who say if they can smell the chems they'd smell you anyway. I spray my clothing including boots gloves and hat with permethrin then my hands, neck, face, n head with OFF deep woods. I also tuck a dryer sheet in the back of my hat slightly hanging out and when it really gets bad I deploy the thermacell.
Might seem excessive but when you begin each day with a banana and end each day with whiskey as I do you really become a marked man for things that bite.

LOL....nah, its actually something I finally let my mother talk me into trying a few weeks ago. At the time my main problem was swarms of gnats in my eyes mouth nose etc........
It really seemed to help the first time I tried it so I've stuck with it.

i wonder how well the dryer sheet does with mosquito's. that'll be interesting to test while fishing.

the river i've been fishing - in the next week or so, is literally going to explode with mosquito's... starting about 90 minutes before dark. we usually just spray on some 100% Deet and keep fishing because the park essentially empties out as soon as the skeeters show themselves in earnest.

its gonna be in the mid 70's this weekend so i'm expecting the first big skeeter attack to happen shortly.

Permethrin + Deet passed the military test of being in a tent with about 1 million mosquito's.
Fly fisherman use Avon skin so soft.
Picardin works good for short periods of time on the skin,
I got a powerful dryer sheet as an advertisement in the mail and it was covered with flies.
Some people just naturally attract mosquitos, I know a guy that was nearly afraid to expose anything to whiz or it in the woods. He said he could hear them dive bombing before impact.

Several years ago I was calling at a cattle guard at last light and it took me a minute to figure out I was hearing a different hum. Thought it was just some interference in my electronic muffs at first, but seemed to be coming from directly overhead. Looking up, here is what I saw. Camera was set on auto flash which made for an interesting picture.

Fortunately, the cloud of mosquitoes didn't descend upon me, but seemed content to hover about 10' above the ground.

avon skin so soft doesnt do anything to stop mosquito's up here. i think its a rumor started by avon to sell some badly needed to move product.

This layer is amazing. http://www.rynoskin.com/ Bought a suit about 4 years ago, and absolutely love it. It does get a bit warm, but I'll take that over chiggers and ticks any day. Just wore it the last 2 days hunting in tick infested brush, and returned with 0 bugs or bites.

I hate sprayin down for bugs, with the smell, and the "shower factor", not to mention soakin up all those chems for the last 40 years

You have to take care to remove any ticks from the outside, as soon as you take it off, as the little nasties can crawl ON it, but can't penetrate. Very easy to remove critters, just hold up to the light, and you can see them due to the sheer nature of the fabric.

Very thin, but strong. I've worn this by itself when hot.... Yes I bow hunt in my underwear sometimes. What a skin tight sight ! Haven't ripped it yet, but avoid really thick / thorny areas.

A jug a permethrin would last a life time too. I was also lucky enough to find some spray called Maxi Deet at one shop it's 98.11% deet and works well.

I try not to use this stuff on anything more than boots and pants, don't really want it all over my skin.
