Time on the stand?

30 to 40 years ago when I was using a cassette e-caller I erased about 10 seconds of sound at 12 minutes on my cassette tapes. So when I heard the pause in sound I was done and moved on to my next calling location. Most of the coyotes we called in showed up between 3 minutes and 8 minutes. Hard charging coyotes can cover over 2 miles very easily in 8 minutes.

Now that I am much older I have slowed way down, most of my calling stands are 20 to 25 minutes long. After around the 8 to 12 minute mark I do switch to a very loud sound and play it for about 1 minute or so. Quite often 2 to 4 minutes after playing a very loud sound on full blast volume I have had coyotes show up.

I am pretty sure if I did 12 minute calling stands all day long I would call in more coyotes in a day than if I did 25 minute calling stands all day long.

I am not in good enough shape to make 12 minute stands all day long so now most of my calling stands are 20 to 25 minutes long. I don't call in very many coyotes between 15 to 25 minutes.

Probably, but if you killed yourself like that, would you have as much fun? I wouldn't. I'm a recreational hunter, so it's more about quality time in the outdoors than body count. I like to be out in the desert, breathing fresh air and creosote, wandering places I haven't before. My work and other personal life is too hectic to make hunting the same. Relax, catch a breath, enjoy life. That's predator hunting for me.

Seeing how at the most I could or would make are 2-3 stands, I’m there for the long haul. If I go calling I might just hit one spot based on recent sign or pic from camera. I don’t mind staying on stand a while if the wind stays true. Heck the last stand I made I was there for 45min with lots of breaks between some calls and had shut off remote and broke everything down and was walking out to get the caller when coyotes lit up.

I enjoy the darkness, something peaceful about it. Thankfully my wife of 30 years, this coming July, knows if I don’t come home for several hours or even the next day that I’m ok and she doesn’t worry. I could stand for hours just watching and waiting even without a caller. I keep telling myself if I give it time, something will eventually come into hearing range.

For me it really depends on where I’m calling. If I’m trying to call an area that doesn’t have a lot of coyotes but I know there is one in an area (it has howled back when I howled) I’ll stay 20-30 minutes to try and get it. But if I’m calling in a place that has lots of Coyotes, and I’m wanting to kill a bunch of them I will only stay 10-15 minutes max and make as many of those stands in day as possible.

I used to call 15 minutes or so, and then move. As I get more experienced, I call 15-20 and on some stands, especially at night I’ll call 30 minutes or longer.

I tend to call 12-20 minutes depending on how I feel about my stand selection, wind, visibility, and chances of a coyote coming in. It's more of a gut feel thing.

Question - do you guys tend to call longer at night than you do in the daytime?

I do 15 min stands but it isn't written in stone, sometimes I stay longer. Just like spot call out to you to call them, sometimes you just have to stay longer. I've had few between 15 and 20, I can't remember any over that.
