Timney trigger issue

I installed a timney trigger a year ago. I have had no issues till yesterday. In the cold the rifle slam fires. If i bring it in and it warms up it functions like it should. I checked the trigger pull and it seems about 8 ounces lighter then i remember setting it. I broke it down today and did the what the instructions indicated from timney. I turned the sear clock wise till it tripped and backed it off 1/6 of a turn and then set the pound screw to 2.5 lbs. I reassembled the gun and it continued to slam fire. So i backed out sear more then the instructed 1/6 turn. I then noticed the pounds had increased by 6 oz. So i readjusted pounds and rifle will now not slam fire. My question is, is backing out the sear screw a issue if its more than 1/6 turn? Its a savage 111 and it previously had a accu trigger installed.

You should get in contact with Timney. From what I hear they
will do you right.

I have four Timney triggers, two of which are on Savages (Mod 12
and Mod 112) with no problems. The 112 actually has less of a
pull than what is recommended, but passed the drop test and
does not slam fire. Both were also previously equipped with
Accu Triggers. Is you sear worn?

I dont think the sear is worn. I have only put 50 or so rounds thru it since i had it installed. I looked at the sear assembly with a scope and when i backed it out 1/6 of a turn after it tripped, it appears to barely biting. So i have since backed it 3/4 of a turn and under a scope the edges are definitely overlapping. I think the 1/6 of a turn recommended just dont seem like enough.

You mention that "In the cold the rifle slam fires. If I bring it in and it warms up it functions like it should". If It were my trigger, I would clean it thoroughly with lighter fluid to remove all oil and other contaminants that might be present.

Since cold weather might be a factor as you stated, there could be some oil in the mechanism that is hardening/becoming more viscous with colder temperatures. I would try that before I sent it off to Timney.

I did reassemble and have since run a few tests on it. It seems to be fine so far. I plan on a friged day to take it out and see if it slam fires again. Its set at 2.25 lbs and i backed out the sear set screw more than 1/2 turn. When it slam fired it was only backed out somewhere around 1/6 turn and was set at 1.5 lbs. Crazy but i see no real difference in the extra .75 lbs increase when i pull the trigger.

My advise is contact Timney and I would think they would help you or replace it. Like was said about do you oil the trigger or is excessive oil getting into trigger area??
