to firedot or to not? Leupold VX6

I want to get a Leupold VX-6 for a long range rifle. I am going to get the 3-18 magnification.

The only part I am not sure about is whether to get the standard v-plex or to buy the firedot.

Anyone own a firedot reticle scope? What are your thoughts on it?

Might as well get all the options. It will be handy if you plan to hunt with it. If it is a range toy or dedicated varmint rig I would spend the extra coin on bullets.

The VX-R FireDot is awesome for night and low light hunting!

The VX-R plex reticle is a little thicker than the regular/standard Leupold plex reticle. I would guess it's the same with the VX-6 FireDot? Maybe not? Just something to be aware of for a long range scope.

If you want it for long range as you stated, you might as well get the varmint hunter reticle. That way you have hold over and windage references out to 600 yards before you ever have to dial it up.

I just bought a 2-12 VX6 with the Boon and Crockett reticle non-illuminated. My hesitation with the illuminated reticle is the electronics is not lifetime warranty, it's 2 years. Just something to consider.

Just 2 years. Yes, but it can't be that expensive to fix if it ever goes bad. At worst you'd have to replace the electronics or upgrade it to a newer reticle technology or something. Awe shucks.

If you're ever going to use it for a calling scope in low light, get the firedot, otherwise the fine duplex is better for a long range plinker.

I have the VX.R 2-7 with the Ballistic Firedot reticle on my Marlin 45-70. I like it for timber and low light conditions but for a varmint gun, the more fine the reticle the better in my opinion. The Firedot is not what I would consider a fine, or thin, reticle.

I would take an illuminated reticle everytime for a hunting rig. They are fast to acquire on a target, ESPECIALLY in low light conditions that we frequently encounter as predator hunters.

Another vote for the firedot. I have a VX6 1-6 with the firedot and on 1x the dot is as bright as a decent red dot sight.

I also have the firedot on a new VXR 4-12; I had it set up with my home made NV rig for the first time the other night and missed one at 150. The conditions were such that I could see the coyote on the screen, but could barely make out the reticle. As I was trying to line up the shot, the dog stopped and then started moving again and I shot behind it. Had I had my firedot on, I would have been right on it instead of struggling to find the reticle.
