Tonight's news! Coyotes love dining on kitty cats

Had a story on the evening news of coyotes catching and killing poor little ole kitty cats. One of those wealthy homes in Naples Fla area caught it on surviellance video camera. The coyote came right in the yard, got the groceries and left with it hanging from his mouth. ALRIGHTY THEN! They even showed the video. Coyote wins. Call FoxPro, need a kitty cat distress sound ASAP.
 
That's old news Pruson, coyotes been eating kitty kats since folks been keeping them as pets. They like then almost as much as those trimmed up Poodles.
 
I was being sarcastic there IDBob /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif, it amazes me when society discovers the obvious like that. Them terrible ole coyotes eating them little kittys like that, ain't it ashame. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif But it was great dang footage though.

Honestly though, I think a Foo-Foo dog would take precedence over a kitty cat, it is both competitive and food. A coyote couldn't say no to that.
 
That was one of those conditioned coyotes. The security camera probably made him bolder and less fearfull of humans.

Was there any reports of recreational callers in the area?
 
I love when non-hunters are a few steps behind, I have been huntin some cat snatchers for the last week or so even downloaded some cat and kitten distress sounds for my mp-3 caller, no takers as of yet that I have seen. The yotes I am hunting done the same thing got a momma and whole litter of kittens from the guys back yard.
 
I fugured you were Pruson, It was a good chuckle though. Most of the farmers around here keep a good supply of barn cats around so's the coyotes don't eat them all. Had a friend took her poodle camping one year just came back with the coller in hand. Were now faced with growing wolf populations that rate dogs high on the menu. They've devastated our bear and cat hound packs in this area.

I know they do Glenn. But I ain't got it, gotta get it! Headin to Florida asap. It was funny, they had some Game Dept guys standing around trying to figure out "whatever shall we do." Shut the liberals up, and call him in and kill him dang it, it is that simple.

Even though these people are all clueless, I am really happy this is getting national press. It helps us. The antis want to present predators as victims to the public, that is how they've managed to do away with calling contests with prizes in some jurisdictions in the past.

If the bleeding-heart clueless public see the coyote as a cruel animal that kills nice fluffy kitties and poodles then that might open up more opportunities for us.

One of the Fish and Game officers in the story defends doing nothing by rationalizing that if they remove offending coyotes then new ones will simply fill the gap, maybe more.

I'm not a biologist, but I've been hunting the critters for ages and in my personal experience they spook out of an area where they and their pals are often shot at. I believe they have a sense of a 'dangerous' area and go elsewhere. Maybe I'm wrong, dunno. Just my observation.

There is a reason coyote density is much higher in the West than in the East: the East has a higher human population and more guys taking pot shots at them when they are out hunting Whitetails, etc. Just my .02.

Well, in a way the biologist is correct. In order to reduce a coyote population you need to remove something like 60% - 70% of the coyotes in that area for FIVE years to make a permanent difference. Otherwise the females will give birth to more pups than usual over the next few years to make up for the difference in the lost population. Many guys go out to help a farmer and kill a coyote or two from the back forty and may actually unknowingly be causing the population to increase over the next year or two unless they keep up the pressure on the coyotes. Killing the wrong coyotes at the wrong time may also cause problems too. Lots of guys don’t understand this, and/or won’t tell the farmer because they don’t want to lose a hunting opportunity.

With that said I agree with you that if the coyotes get a lot of pressure you can alter their hunting habits and maybe push them around into a new area. Someone else’s neighborhood! The problem for the biologist is that in an urban setting they won’t keep the pressure on long enough and hard enough to do this. Nor will they remove enough coyotes to really make a difference. It’s hard to beat em’!
 
The FWC doesn't pay much. Their officers are either real dedicated or can't do much else. That officer said,"they have always been here." Not true, they were not even in central FL in the 90's, and just coming into NW FL in the early 80's.

Government has gotten to the point that it doesn't solve problems because it is the problem. I think sometimes that some departments go to great lengths to hire people that have no prior knowledge of the area they will be working in.

If a predator learns that an easy food source is in a certain location, they will continue returning to that location. That's a fact. They will also teach their offspring the same.
Kill the ones causing problems and you limit the problem. I used to have a bad coon problem when I lived in the big city. Subsonic 22lr, SSS.
