I know this is a long shot but i figure ill ask.

Im headed up to Tonopah Sunday to start scouting for an upcoming cow elk hunt and am going to spend my down time trying to shoot some Coyotes. I'm wondering if anyone can throw a new guy some decent spots around the area to check out and hopefully drop a few yotes.

Thanks as always!!

Just trying to put this as kindly as possible. I live part time in Vegas. And the question you asked will more than likely not be answered. Since your headed up to tonopah scouting for Cow elk?????... Time for you to learn how to scout for coyotes. Most will give advice on the how to's, but not the locations.

East of town has been descent. There were some good size cattle ranches with coyotes. North east is good too or has been in the past.

Wish I could tell you but haven't been there. But looking at the map, if I was to go, I would hit around the agriculture areas north of HWY 50, north of Tonopah.

I can guarantee you if someone from Vegas is telling where to go without a free gas, snacks, and a ham sandwich, it's probably moon wasteland. Most (not all) coyote hunters around in these parts are in the biz of promoting themselves as "ride along coaches", when really, they don't know where to hunt and are hoping to get some action and learn a thing or two from YOU. I've had to take a couple of these keyboard warriors out and call them in a dog or two. It only takes once to get a clear optics on this scam.

For Gods sake, don't put it on this board if you have any luck. PM me if you want to know where not to go. I've only been here for two winters and take a lot of my hunts back to Colorado and Kansas, but I've been out enough to know you can waste a lot of time here.
One thing is for sure, action is pretty thin if you don't get out of Las Vegas at least a 2-3 hours.

Good luck on your elk hunt!

I drove from tonopha to denio through battle mountain this spring and there were plenty of dead coyotes Along the way and lots of public land, can't imagine not finding coyotes there. But then to me there seemed to be plenty of coyotes south of Vegas too. I'll be hunting the Vegas to parker area in Feb and March this winter.

Thanks to those of you who responded positively to this post, we didn't see any coyotes up where we were but I'm pretty sure coyotes don't like to hang out at the elevations we were at.

I've seen and shot coyotes here in Colorado above 9000 ft. elevation. I don't see Nevada coyotes being much different than here on elevation.

I whacked this one at about 9,500 in CA.

The idea that there are no coyote for 3 hours out of vegas seems a little crazy to me. The mojave preserve is just 1 hour away and has plenty, unfortunately its in comifornia though.

They like any elevation, as long as there is food and water. Much of NV's problem is due to very little rain, the lower elevation drainages are we're the life blood is.

Go to the the Nevada department of Wildlife and get the Water Development Atlas ($50) Last I checked there are over 1500 guzzlers in Nevada. The atlas I had showed you where they were but not how to get there. You still had to do your own home work to find them. Good luck

True story: my youngest just turned 14. A few years ago I booked an outfitter in NE California for a bull elk hunt for my sons 10th birthday. Long story short, he got his elk a few days into the hunt. When we finally got back to camp there were still a few hunters their and some other hunters arriving for their hunt. About 12 hunters sat for dinner and as always, began talking about hunting. (Normal stuff) a couple of hunters that just arrived were high fiving my kid and so on. The question arrised? "Where did you shoot it"? We openly told them with no hesitation. A little later, one hunter began speaking about predator hunting.....definitely NOT to my surprise, everything went quiet for a few minutes. As we spoke the answers became shorter and shorter. Later that evening, my son asked me, why is it that all the times we've been out big game hunting, people ask...where did you make your kill? And you tell them. But when it comes to predator hunting, you won't give out ANY information. Honestly...didn't have the answer! I just told him, when I started hunting predators with my pops and grandpa back in the early 70's, it was that way too....! I told him, 2 things you don't ever do while predator hunting! (1) don't give out any of your spots or there will be other hunters going after what you have worked so hard to find! (2) Never take credit for a kill that you didn't get! I also told him that he was luckier than some because you have been taught how to hunt at a young age. Guess the morale of the story just in my opinion is....predator hunters are a slightly different breed? We are tight lipped about spots that took time to find. Regards, Drop........

wow that is awesome. In CA they do not want to release the location of any guzzlers. Infact, they just want to remove all of them.

Nice kill Triple...and your correct, coyotes are at high elevations. But that being said, I have to agree with Paul on a couple of things. First, yes! If you want to find large concentrations of coyotes, you have to get out 2-3 hrs (obviously) north. Second, unfortunately I have ran across these so called dog hunters trying to find out some new locations without doing their own homework. Example: a couple years ago I hunted in one of Nevada's smaller tournaments. My partner was my son. Just before and during registration, there had to be a half dozen hunters asking my kid questions about where we were going and what our plan was....my kid knew already not to say a word! Guess when it comes down to it! People will do anything for the prize money or whatever else there is? Btw: I sent the OP a PM to help out a little....and as I thought, no response?????
