Tracking system questions

I'm looking to buy a tracking system for coyote hounds. The area I hunt is fairly flat. I'm looking for a portable unit with good range as I don't want to have antenna on top of my truck. I'm leaning towards a Field Marshall or Johnsons Telemetry. No GPS as it won't be compatable with my hunting buddies systems. Please give me your advice and experiences. I want to keep the cost under $1100 for the system and one collar. I also want to be able to track several collars in the 217. range. Thanks

Do yourself a favor and go with Marshall, I have used them all and none of them hold a candle to the Marshall. Johnson is a good system but the Marshall gets a better signal and are so much more user freindly, they are well worth them money. I have the stealth and 10 Marshall collars I sold all my Johnsons and Wildlife collars and systems.
You will have alot of guys tell you how good the blue box is, but it is such a pain in the butt to put together and the Marshall still gets better distance.Guys will tell you how good the Johnson collars are and they are but they are big and bulky, you can't ever tell how much life is left on the collar and the Marshall gets a better signal further away.
Another thing I like about the Marshall collar is if the dog is dead or just sleeping the collar will skip a beat, Dog down I think they call it.
You wont regret buying a Marshall system, and you will be suprised... your buddies will buy them after seeing yours

The drawback to a Marshall system is the cost. I don't know what the current asking price for the Field Marshall is, but I suspect it may be above your $1,100 budget. I know the Stealth receiver runs well above $1,500 last time I checked.

Nothing against the Marshall, my closest hunting buddy has a Stealth that he's used for years, so I have spent a lot of time around them. But when my Wildlife receiver gave out a couple of years ago I decided to go with a QuickTrack QTR 6000.........and haven't regretted it. Standing side be side tracking the same collar, I haven't been able to tell an appreciable difference between the Stealth receiver's ability to pick up a weak signal and my own QuickTrack.

What sold me on the QuickTrack QTR 6000 besides the lower price, was is its ability to track all collar fequencies in the 216, 217, 218, 219, 220, and 221 ranges. I have collars that my buddy with the Marshall Stealth can't track because it's not among the 150 channels his receiver is programed for. Plus, I don't have to fine tune a collar to get a crisper signal prior to a hunt. Someone I've never hunted with can call me on the radio with a frequency number and I can immediately start tracking their dog.

I believe you can still get a QTR 6000 with a collar for around $900.

Again, nothing against the Marshall or any other tracking system, I don't know that you can go wrong with any of them. I'm just saying that I've sure been happy with my QuickTrack.

I was told a few years ago that the Johnson System was the best.I didn't know any better, and bought a system, now as I have run with more guys and seen thier systems,I like the Marshall collars better than my Johnsons, and I like the Quick track receiver better than my "blue box". Not saying any is bad, I just wish I had talked to more guys, and tried a few diff systems before I purchased.

Duane, It doesn't matter much it seems like jsut as soon as you buy something someone will come out with something better.lol

Thanks for the replies. I'm really considering the Marshall system. Any suggestions on where the best place to purchase one is based on cost and reputation?

Valley Creek hunting Supplies seems to have the best prices on them. He has a ebay store also, I have bought many of my collars from him sometimes at half the normal price.

I like my Tracker Maxima it's small and very easy to use. But for the money I would go with the R-400 it the exact same thing as the Quick Track system just alot cheaper.
